Subject: Question about sea-swims and salt-water intake
Hey folks.

Recently, I've been training for my first upcoming tri (Sado Island International Long Distance Triathlon) by doing some sea swims. One thing that I'm a bit worried about is the amount of water that I'm involuntarily swallowing while doing the swim. My question is, is this normal? Do most of you who have done this before take in a bit of seawater during your swim? And if so, how much should I plan on drinking during the bike section in order to flush out that extra salt? Also, any suggestions on how to minimize the amount of water I'm taking in?

Thanks a bunch.

It's totally normal, don't sweat it. You can't possibly be taking in enough salt water to actually hurt you...think of it as electrolyte loading. Seriously, unless you're just opening your mouth and gulping the water down, you'll be OK. Breathe like you do in the pool.

I keep two large bottles of water at the transition area (1 for washing feet, 1 for swishing water in mouth), expecially in the ocean. As you are prepping to head off on the bike, gurgle and swish plenty of water (spit it directly under your bike), before heading off.
Otherwise you may be tempted (like me), to drink sooner and more than you plan to on the race, causing you to run out of water than aticipated.
