Subject: RE: Help! Cracked Front Derailleur Hanger This same problem happened to me this summer with my Javelin. My bike shop had a hard time getting ahold of anyone at Javelin. Here's some of an email about what you should expect. Apparently your frame/bike was one manufactured by the original Javelin bike company. The company has since been sold and is now based out of Illinois. Unfortunately, your frame can not be fully warranted. Javelin is willing to offer you a no fault replacement at a discounted price. The current bike/frame which is most similar to your bike is called the Barolo http://www.javbike.com/Barolo.html. ; They offer a 650c 48cm bike/frame that would be a close match to your current frame http://www.javbike.com/Geometry.html ;. The msrp of the Barolo frame/fork/seat post is normally $1100. Your price would be $605, plus the cost of switching the parts from your old bike to the new frame. The bike shop was going to charge $250-300 to switch the parts and labor.
Should you not wish to purchase a new frame, I could try to repair your existing frame by removing the broken front derailleur braze on and installing a new one. The cost for repairing your frame would cost between $200-300, depending on how long it will take to cut off the old one, grind down the old weld and install the new braze on (using epoxy and rivets). My only concern with repairing your frame, is that there is a chance that attaching the new braze on with rivets requires that we drill two small holes in the frame. The holes could possibly lead to minor stress cracks which will not likely cause the bike to break in half, but may result in the bike being unusable. I ended up getting a new bike, the bike treated me well for over 2 years for just $600 and was ready to get a new bike. I still have my broken Javelin and have no idea what to do with it. I thought I'd sell the parts but the bike shop said there not really worth anything. I haven't investigated whether or not it's true.
Hope this info helps. |
