I was getting ready to hop on my trainer for a quick ride this afternoon.  I realized that all my bike shorts (Performance brand Gel shorts...crappy I know) were dirty.  Because I was going to be on the trainer I couldn't bring myself to put on a pair of smelly, dirty bike shorts.  I was bummed till I realized my tri-shorts were clean.  I haven't been training on the bike with the tri-shorts for a long time, and I expected them to be MUCH more uncomfortable then my regular bike shorts.  They weren't!  They were great.  Even though the chamois is mcuh thinner on the tri shorts it felt more padded.  Has anybody noticed the same thing?  Is it because the gel shorts are not good?

Oh, I have Sugoi tri-shorts, and, as stated above, Performance brand bike shorts.

I wear tri shorts for all riding.  Just prefer the thinner pad.  Probably has nothing to do with the "quality" of the shorts/pad, but a good fit is pretty important and different shorts fit differently.

I have a couple pairs of bike shorts, but I'm a converted tri shorts person for all rides.

I still use my bike shorts from time to time...but never on the trainer.  I find the longer I'm sitting, the more I prefer tri shorts...and on the trainer...I'm sitting for a much larger % of time.

Dunno, don't own bike shorts. But I have done 5 hour roller rides in tri shorts. I don't think I would like all that padding.

I had a pair of DeSoto bike-specific shorts when I started back in '00, wore them maybe twice, and then switched to DeSoto plain-old tri shorts. I have worn thinthinthin-padded tri shorts (and only DeSoto!) for every ride ever since, regardless of distance, and cannot imagine wearing anything with even a teensy bit more padding. And my saddle is nothing special (no gel, no cut-out) so somehow I managed to condition my "sits bones", and environs , to tolerate anything that hints at discomfort. Halleloo!

Funny you asked because this is the first time I have used my Performance bike shorts on the trainer.  I almost always use tri shorts.

I also had the same conclusion.  The tri-shorts was more comfy.  I don't know why but its just the way it is right now.

I've noticed the same.  I assume its because the tri shorts are designed to perform well even after a good soaking, cheap bike shorts, not so much.

Glad you asked this. I'll be hitting the trainer the very first time shortly and was wondering which would be best to wear. Thanks.

Umm, so does this mean that if you were on the road you could bring yourself to put on a pair of smelly, dirty bike shorts?

Agree, I have one pair of bike shorts that I really don't like. I prefer my tri shorts too.

I usually wear bike shorts with thin pads because I find them more comfortable than the thickly padded bike shorts.  I got used to tri shorts and never wanted to go back to the thick ones.

I've got bike shorts and don't like them anymore ever since I purchased a pair of decent tri shorts and use those now.

tri shorts all the time. I threw away all of my 'diapers' a long time ago. Not sure how anybody can stand regular bike shorts.

Personally, I prefer bike shorts for riding; unless I'm racing, I wear bib shorts/tights for all my riding.

I prefer my tri shorts as well because it doesn't feel like I am wearing a diaper :p

I might have been more apt to put on smelly shorts if I was moving away from the smell.   ;D
