Pre-race routine:

I got up at 3 AM...ugh. I got to the parking lot at 7 AM and was slightly tired and chest cold was wearing on me. I met up with Darrel (McQ). We jogged some and walked the first mile or so of the trail. As we were standing for the start Biggsmoothe introduced himself. Overall, great start to the morning. Side note, this was a C race. I signed up to have fun and stay engaged with running over the winter.
Event warmup:

jog and walk w/ McQ
Run
  • 1h 45m 2s
  • 9 miles
  • 11m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

easy start on the concrete for .5 miles, then hit the trail. I was in line and holding my own. Really felt relaxed. Light feet and making good decisions. BAM! turned my ankle and it hurt. I took a minute to gather myself, but this was the end of my "race", it was now a training run. Held a steady, but pedestrian pace. BAM! turned it again...now it starts to hurt...calf and hamstring was feeling twitchy. Slowed down and just wanted to get to the line. BAM! I was on the deck is a second. lucky, it was a soft area or it would have been ugly. I sat for a second and laughed. 1.5 miles left and I only wanted the comfort of my car!
What would you do differently?:

I needed more skill to run at a higher rate. I think I had the form to knock off 15 - 20 mins. Just need more trail running.
Post race
Warm down:

sat and rubbed my ankle for 10 mins. LOL

What limited your ability to perform faster:

trail experience.

Event comments:

great trails, but they are really made for mountain bikes. It would have been nice to have some sections that did not try to kill you.

Ah man, those rocky sections were brutal, plus we had the joy of doing them twice.  Xterra = twisted ankle series.  Thanks for hanging out before hand, that was cool.

Trail races are fun but they can sure tear you up.  Heal up, you've got 4 weeks for the next one!!!

Ouch! Sorry to hear about the turned ankle.  I have always wondered how many and how often people injure themselves on an Xterra trail run.  The few that I've done have always had some CRAZY sections where the running surface was loose, rocky, and very unforgiving.    The run portions have always been more brutal than the bike segment.

Surprisingly, I've found that if I wear lightweight shoes my foot strike is "softer" and much shorter than on nontechnical trails.  A word of caution though on the footwear,  it took me a long time to condition my body to the stress and I was snail slow for many, many, many months.  Strike that- I am talking about; I am still slow HA!
