For the competition.  I'd be doing something fitness related anyway, but I enjoy s/b/r and I love the rush of competition even more.

2 close mates (Husband and Wife) have both been diagnosed with Cancer, the husband cannot be treated. I'm doing it to raise money for Cancer Research UK, Every one who knows me knows I hate fitness, I hate exercise - so it is a big thing for me and not an easy fundraiser!

For the challenge and to stay in shape.  Also, it is something my wife and I can do together for fun.

I started tri way back in 1984... Running injuries... Doc said get in the pool. Guys in the pool said get a bike. So tri seemed like the next logical step. Did my first tri in June of 1984... And that's the "how I got started", not the "why I continue to do it"...

And maybe part of the answer is that I've always liked it, and it seems like I've "always" done it, so it's easy and comfortable to keep doing it.

I think I just like to kick a little butt and by butt I mean my own.  I'm not good enough to compete with the front of the back however I am good enough to compete with myself.

It is a hobby I enjoy and I get the benefit of staying fit. I am retired and it sure beats other hobbies I tried. Fishing is boring to me, and golf frustraties the hell out of me. The training keeps me active every day and the races give me goals to work toward.

I did it once and I told myself I could stop whenever I wanted, addiction would NOT happen to me... that was 2 years ago, and I am a tri addict.  The first step is admitting it to yourself, right?

Because I enjoy competition.
Because swimming, biking, and running are all activities which I enjoy.
Because I feel better about myself as an athlete than I did as a lazy couch potato.
Because triathlon people seem accepting, fun, energetic, and just generally fun to be around.

b'cuz I read an article in Runner's World that said "if you can run a 5k, you can be Tri-ready in 6 weeks."
They forgot to say that although you can do it and not die, doesn't mean you won't feel like you will.
Then the challenge started - do it until it doesn't hurt so much.
BTW - podium'd at both of them....   tee hee!!!

Because I've been swimming, biking, and running for years just for fitness. I just needed the right group of people to nudge me along a little.
