Extreme Veteran 584 Puyallup, WA | Subject: RE: Simple question... briderdt - 2010-11-12 3:23 PM I started tri way back in 1984... Running injuries... Doc said get in the pool. Guys in the pool said get a bike. So tri seemed like the next logical step. Did my first tri in June of 1984... And that's the "how I got started", not the "why I continue to do it"... And maybe part of the answer is that I've always liked it, and it seems like I've "always" done it, so it's easy and comfortable to keep doing it. Because its Dave's fault ... He got me hooked to S.B.R. I enjoy the people I meet and the fitness that comes along with training. I have done things in the last year that I thought I would never be able to do. Nothing beats the feeling of toeing that start line and crossing the finish Less than a year ago I was 60 pounds heavier, coach potato, and ex smoker, couldn't run 1/4 mile without being out of breath, and swim only 25 yards. Now 60 pounds lighter, can run 15 miles at 9 min per mile and swim 1000 yards without stopping. Training for my first half mary in two weeks Why do I do triathlons?.... because I can |

The interesting thing is I went to the store to purchase wine yesterday and was carded. Probably the first time in close to 15 to 20 years. The cashier thought I was quite a bit younger. She was surprised to see I was 45. This is also what the training does for you. It makes you look and feel younger |

It makes you look and feel younger Yup-- I had a physical yesterday, and my doctor said I looked like I was her 24-year-old daughter's age. Not bad for a 40-year-old! I don't get carded all that often, but I do occasionally get mistaken for a student when I'm walking between classes at work. Highly amusing. |

431 | Subject: RE: Simple question... I reached a point where I finally realized I had to do this stuff for the rest of my useful life, so I might as well make it fun. I've also found the people I've met in the tri world to me among the most positive and supportive group I've met anywhere. Having 3 disciplines to choose from when training works wonder for the psyche. On those days that the road is beating me I think of team Hoyt and all of the people who would gladly trade their handicap to be out there. I then remember just how quickly it can all be taken away. Then I look up at the beautiful morning sky and thank God for allowing me to be there on that day. Some days I actually cry when thinking through these thoughts.....Imagine that.....running down the side of a highway at dawn with tears on your cheeks. Kinda puts the aches and pains in perspective, checks the perspective and makes it awful hard to stop short on the workout. |

Extreme Veteran 516 Chicago | Subject: RE: Simple question... I was always a runner since 8th grade and swam in HS. Swimming fell off after I graduated and I struggled to keep running. I just wasn't motivated for some reason even after gaining about 35lbs. But, for some reason I am drawn to triathlon and even though this has been my first year and I've only got 2 races under my belt I feel it's become a part of me. And now that I've got about 8 months of tri training I think it's gotten me into the best shape of my life, even compared to HS when I was a faster runner/swimmer. On top of all that, I'm having a lot of fun! |

Expert 1070 Denver Area | Subject: RE: Simple question... I tri because it's a physically demanding activity, and I like to eat...do I tri because I eat or eat because I tri? Noticed that persons involved in triathlon as a lifestyle are generally of good character, friendly, and supportive of anyone who puts forth the effort. It's an awesome community. I like to challenge myself--well, I'm discovering that, and I (apparently) want to go faster than the swimmer in the next lane, even if it is an elderly man. I <3 my triathlon-bod, and have proof now that I'll rebound faster from pregnancy having been in such kickazz shape prior. IT'S SO MUCH FUN! And lets face it, why am I here if not to play and have fun? **And then I headed over to the BACON! thread, maybe I only do triathlons so's I kin eat me some BACON. Pro 5361 | Subject: RE: Simple question... My first attempt at marathon training ended with me completing all the training, and injured just in time for the starting line. Couldn't run, so I bought a bike. So, there I was with a bike, my injury healed, and I was already a good swimmer (captain of my HS team). So, the transition was just natural. I always imagined myself as a triathlete- just never got around to it beforehand. Plus- it's a hoot of a fitness party. |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Simple question... I moved somewhere really hot (Vietnam) and I hate running in the heat and humidity. I wanted to get back in shape without running every day after several years of minimal exercise, and joined a master's swim group. Really enjoyed returning to swimming after 25 years away from it. The coach and my swim buddies assumed I was a triathlete and were surprised when said I wasn't. They asked me why not and when I realized I didn't have a sensible answer, decided to train for my first one! It is great to do more balanced training and look forward to different kinds of workouts and races--helps a lot with injury prevention and motivation. |

Veteran 277 The Nation's Frosty Capital | Subject: RE: Simple question... Why do I do triathlons? I cannot not do them. I love the incomparable energy of race day. I love passing people. I love fighting back after I 've been passed. I love getting passed by someone 20 years older than me and then busting a lung trying to keep up to him. Inspiration. I love open water swimming. Especially when it's cold and wavy. And that's usually how it is. I love hanging out with ahtletes. I love being fit. I love the cool equipment. And I really hate golf...and everyone I know that's my age golfs. Cheers. |

Pretty similar to me... running injuries, and a shove from my doctor in the direction of swimming or biking. And maybe part of the answer is that I've always liked it, and it seems like I've "always" done it, so it's easy and comfortable to keep doing it. I enjoy the variety and the challenge. I love to compete against myself. I also love it that my husband joins me on training runs and rides, although I have yet to get him in the pool! |
