Sunny
Total Time = 6h 31m 21s
Overall Rank = 311/441
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 20/33
Pre-race routine:

slept till 6am grabbed some coffee, bagel and banana from hotel lobby, was gonna walk the mile to t-1 but hitched a ride after 2 blocks.
Event warmup:

Helped hypothermia swimmer to safety put my hoodie on him and tracked down some race workers.
My only complaint is they need to watch the full guys who get pulled out, I kinda had to track them down down on my own with a shivering swimmer.
Swim
  • 43m 43s
  • 2078 yards
  • 02m 06s / 100 yards
Comments:

Well I was a terrible swimmer and have worked to be just slow.I swam great till the boat turn, then it seemed there were swimmers everywhere, all over the place.I tried to find some clean water and just grind but ended way right almost bumping my head on a docked boat had to swim a extra 200 yards back to the channel. I would have been under 40 which would have been great if I navigated better.
What would you do differently?:

Practice the course if possible and go way left after the turn then angle to finish.Wet suit stripper was great. Run didn't bother me barefoot
Transition 1
  • 08m 23s
Comments:

I took a little more time for comfort as this was my first HIM and wanted to feel good.showered, dried off and did a complete change to bike gear.
long sleeve jersey and gloves were perfect for the weather.
What would you do differently?:

don't drop body glide...and pee in the shower.
Bike
  • 3h 07m 31s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.92 mile/hr
Comments:

with the lack of long trainng rides I thought I raced as well as Me and my equipment could, passed a lot of folks and only seemed to get passed by the guys with the 5,000 dollar rides and teardrop helmets.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really maybe have a better swim and transition so i won't have to pass as many riders.
Transition 2
  • 00m 23s
Comments:

Not bad.... most of my time here was walking to get my garmin right and back loosened up.
What would you do differently?:

I am gonna work on my core more this year...maybe that will help my lower back
Run
  • 2h 27m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

I never could get my back loose or get into a good groove. I had cramps ,upset stomach. I Never thought I would run this slow. This was my my biggest disappointed.I thought for sure I would under 2:10 and 2:15 at the most.
What would you do differently?:

I will train harder and put in more miles and bricks
Post race
Warm down:

Well I almost passed out and the doc wanted to know if I needed an IV...I told him I'll be alright but he stayed with me till passing me off to family.

Felt sick, but ate a peanut butter bagel and Pepsi and felt better.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I just need to train harder, put more miles in the bank, and lose another 10lbs

Event comments:

I absolutely loved the race, the city of Wilmington, and a big hand to all the wonderful volunteers.

Congrats on your first HIM!  Great report.

Wow, you had to help a swimmer out?  I've heard this race is being moved up earlier in the season so it won't be so cold next time.

As for navigating after the turn, I had the same issues.  In hindsight, I think there was just so much visual business, i.e.... so many docks, boats, just a lot of stuff everywhere.... it made it hard to sight the route.

I had about the same run goal too!

You did awesome!

Thanks for the encouraging words...Yea I was standing about 2-3 docks just north of the start, when one of the paddleboarders dropped off a full swimmer. I put my black hoodie on him and got him to the U-Haul and Doctor. The doc said he would be fine because he was still shivering. He said it's time to worry when they stop shivering.
