miker-online - 2011-01-03 4:49 PM This will be my 5th HIM and 3rd time doing this race. The location of the race is great especially if you have a family. Plenty to do for the the kids while they wait for you to finish. I would recommend staying in the campground/cabins or Fort Wilderness Lodge. It makes race day a lot easier when you can get out of bed at 5:00am, walk 1/4 to 1/2 mile to transition and not have to worry about driving to the parking lot, waiting for the bus to take you to transition. The swim is covered with safety personnel so no worries about needing help.  The water visibility is 1-3 feet, so you will be in for a shock if all you have done is swim in the pool with lane lines. The bike course is good with some hills, nothing to worry about or train specifically for. As for the run, there is no getting around this one, it is TOUGH. 3 loops with halve of each loop on packed dirt canal banks. The trees on both sides of the canal bank block any wind. Don't blow all your energy on the bike because you will need it for the run. I would recommend getting sponges on your first lap and keep them throughout the entire run because they tend to run out. Almost all aid stations on the run have baby pools filled with ice water. Take the few seconds to ring out the sponges and soak up the cold water at each. I try and get three sponges, one goes on the back of my neck, the other two down the front of my jersey. Last year after the race they let you soak in the lake, but you could not go out deep. Going back to staying on location, now you can go back to your room if you are able to get a late checkout, or you can still take a dip in the pool to clean up. Beats getting back on the bus, getting back in your car, then driving home.

thanks for info.

I'm doing this race this Sunday as part of my training for the Florida 70.3 in May.

http://www.tamparaces.com/challenge/

It's a technical trail run half marathon that should be at least as challenging as the Disney run.  I have heard it's very technical and there are parts of the course that are so steep you have to climb up or slide down.  I guess I'll find out on Sunday.

I agree with you on the temperature, but there's not much I can do about that right now.  I've always done all my training in the afternoon so as the race gets closer I'll be training in hotter temps also.

So, whats new?  JK - r u traveling that AM?  Man, I'm looking for a massagist for WED.  PM me your GFs contact.  Rather pay someone I know.

Also, it would be best if we all try to stick to the official race blog on BT: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=233834&start=41

Im staying at a friend's house nearby - carrying the whole family to the race so I plan to arrive at Ft W@WDW near 5:15 - I am real excited about this one.  I hope they have more sighting buoys than Miami and THX for the tips on the sponges.

I know this area of FL can be hilly - how's the bike course?  Does anyone know?

Nothing like the un-seasonal nice weather here in Florida to go away a week before the race and get back to our 95 degree days and high humidity.    Just did a mid-day run and let's just say it is going to be a "fun" day out there.   Maybe do a rain dance as I wouldn't mind breaking our drought with a nice shower or two come run segment.

Hey, Im from FHawk and I got a coupe of very decent bike routes plotted here.  U might wanna chk them out.  I travel quite a bit but when Im home Im riding.  Maybe we'll cross paths soon.  I dont really dig the trip north to park in New Tampa but there is a bike ride tht leaves Boyette and Fishhawk Blvd corner on Sat and Sun AM.  Several ride capabilites... it helped me lots

BTW: that guy Boom moved to KY/OH border a few months ago cuz he wanted to ride some hills (and to go to school).  Didnt know how to swim other than on top of a surfboard and now he kicks freestyle stroke .  Anyways, not too many triathletes in this side of town so let me know if you wanna hook up.  Im easier to reach via email

WTH is wrong with you people?  Haven't you been watching news?  LOL  I hope u have a couple nice furry coats and heavyduty rubber boots.  Yell

Boom's my buddy - that's why I can say nasty things about the brother.

Memorial weekend sounds good - lets shoot for SAT AM if you decide to do it.  Let me know how far you guys wanna ride and I'll set the plot.  Sundays are church and family days for me.

We can pretty much do any kind of distance, from 15mi all the way to 75+ and ride @ your pace.   I am also doing HIM this weekend so maybe we can hook up at WDW, I'll be checking in bet 2 and 3PM as I got a kids' soccer game at 1130 here in Fhawk Sat AM.  I'm racing 40-44 AG and my jersey has the word CASTRO written on the back (on race day).  Ahhh, No, Im not a communist, that's just my last name - LOLOLOL  In that case, I would've written CHAVEZ....Innocent

Since Miami was my first (and only other) HIM, I rather wait until after this race before I give details about the infamous "Miami fiasco"...  who knows?  it might have met the IM standards and thus why not everyone does this kind of sport!    But I will say that it was tuff and I finished 50 mins behind my goal.

G'luck, heal well, and for crying out loud, STAY HYDRATED!!!

Please let this be accurate:

http://www.weather.com/weather/wxdetail/USFL0372?dayNum=3

Predicting high of only 83!   That is awesome.   decent wind, but will take it all day with no temps in the 90's.   Also looks liek humidity is going to be down.   Too good to be true...

Wowzers!  That is not bad at all.  But then again, weather forecast, does that really exist?  Sealed

Thanks!  I will copy into the race's facebook page.

yes they did - tahnk goodness cuz I could not imagine that being any longer.

I was amazed at the organization of this event - this one being my second 70.3 ever.  The swim was excellent, the bike beautiful and somewhat challenging, more from the wind than the rolling hills, and the run, well, that was challenging to me, a non-runner, but a lot of people really picked up the pace there.

My time:  7:16:56, a little dissappointing but good enuff for a FINISHER's medal, cap and some pizza.

This isn't a race to grab a lot of swag (a t-shirt LAVA magazine and some promotionals), but the police support along every intersection, the plentyful support and water, Ironman drinks, gels, etc really made it for me.  Even tho theres not a lot for spectators to do, the weather y'day was so nice people were just stretching blankets on the grass and napping or just taking it easy.

I did not know about the run course change until after.  The whole run I was thinking "this is what everyone complains about?"  It really was not bad at all.  Maybe a mile or so per loop of off-road and even it was short grass on a dirt path.  Not bad at all.  I think people should give this one another chance.

The trails back around the Wilderness Lodge were nice and shady.  The aid stations on the run were well stocked and all the volunteers were wonderful.

I thought the swim was long based on my and my wife's times.

I too was impressed with the bike course.  More challenging that I expected with the wind and hills.  There was maybe only 5-10 miles where we had to share a line with traffic.  The rest of the time we had our own lane.

6:27:35 was my final time.  I was happy with it but thought my run could have been faster.
