Hello!

Hey I'm in too.  I signed up about a month ago and have been doing a bunch of trail running to get ready.

I'm doing the 25K. It is going to be my first Trail Race.

It would be cool if we could meet up. I'm going to the dinner on Friday night.  Are you two going to be there?

I've been reading the course report, viewing the maps and reading trail running forums trying to get in the spirit. I'm actually a bit scared! :-)

Here is a preview of what's to come: PICTURES

Pictures look cool!

Well this is going to be a trail hike for me. I got an injury back in Sept, that I have been nursing every since. So my training has been less that impressive.

I'm just going out to have fun! My Mom will be there. So I'm taking the camera and my cell phone on the "run". That way she can be a part of the race.

I sent you a message Brad.

I'm not going to the dinner, but I will be at the trail briefing on Friday afternoon. I'll wear a long sleeve white "10 for Texas" shirt with a red armadillo on it to make me easy to spot. Not sure yet if I'll be solo or if my wife will attend with me.

I'm still doing the 50k, but my goal's to try not to fall, rather than shoot for a specific time. I know I'll walk anything too steep or rocky, but expect I'll be able to run all of the tame sections of the trail. This will be my 3rd trail race (Rocky Racoon 50-Mi & Texas Trails 50k), but both the others were at Huntsville State Park. I feel like Bandera will be in a completely different class than either of the Huntsville races, based on both the hills and the rocks.....kind of seems like moving up to the big leagues.

Since this is my first Trail race I do have a question about what to carry.

For any runs over 10 miles I carry a Ultimate Direction waist belt that carries one water bottle. It also has a pocket that I carry Gels and a PowerBar in.

Do you think I'll need to carry more water?
Or carry extra clothes?

What are you guys wearing or carrying?

Thanks.

I'm going to wear an amphipod belt and carry two 10-oz bottles in it. The aid stations are 4 to 6 miles apart and it's not going to be hot, so I'll drink at the aid stations and make sure I leave with my bottles full. If it were going to be hot, I'd add a third bottle to my belt. I have a bigger hand-held, but I just got it and am really not used to carrying it yet on longer runs, so it'll stay at home so I'm not tempted to carry it at the last minute. I'm sure you'll see everything from people not carrying anything to people with two hand-helds or a camelback. Handhelds are probably more popular than belts. The Tejas Trails race I did in 2010 had VERY well-stocked aid stations, but I'll probably go ahead and carry enough gels to get me through the day.

For clothes, I'm hoping to get by with shorts, a short sleeve shirt, and a long sleeve shirt; with the idea that I'll shed the long-sleeve as the day gets warmer. Hat/gloves for the morning are a maybe for me right now; I'll bring them and decide Saturday morning. That plan may change with changes in forecast. Rain is the big wild card for me. If I'm going to be soaking wet, I'm going to wear an extra layer or two and will probably wear a ball cap to keep at least some of the water off my face. I'll have a pair of tights along just in case, but I'd rather be too cool than too hot.

I may also put some dry stuff (towel, clothes, shoes, and socks) in a drop bag, just in case the day starts wet and the weather changes.

Hey Greg,

Great information!

I do see there is a 60% chance of showers on Saturday.  I'm planning on going with shorts and a combination of compression top with short or long sleeve shirt.  Recently I've really like the sleeveless compression top and long sleeve tech top. I will have a hat on too, I'm liking the SweatVacs.

Considering I drank 2 cups of water in the San Antonio 1/2 Marathon. I'm hoping my one water bottle and aid stations will be enough.  I plan on carrying the Gels and PowerBar for my piece of mind.

There are no drop bag stations for the 25K.  So what I go out with is what I get for 15.5 miles, hopefully I guess right at the beginning of the race.

I have never run with my hydration backpack and keeping with "don't try anything new on race day" I won't be wearing it Saturday.

See you at the Trail briefing.

I was at RR last year spectating and people said Bandera is a MUCH HARDER race than RR (people who have done both).

You will be fine I'm sure. Good luck!

What a killer run! Could not have asked for better weather. Bright blue sky, 50's, sunny with a light breeze.

I had a great run until about mile 9 with I believe I was lacking some fuel in the tank.  I took on board for fluids and food at the aid station.  At about mile 11 it must have kicked in and I was back to running and walking the steeps without much problems.

Now giving I've never done a trail race I wasn't sure what to expect for times.

I finished in exactly 3 hours.

Bandera and Cactus Rose in Bandera could become an annual event.

Nice meeting you and your mom Karen.

Well Brad, sounds like you had an amazing race! I was SUPER SLOW! Uh yeah... an embarrassing 4:45. sad to say... I WORKED for that too! Just super hilly and rocky. I can't run on it. Ha! Oh well, it was nice to see the sights out there. I had never checked out the hill country like that. Can't say I'll go back. I had more fun at Toughest N Texas in Waco. It's a hilly trail run, that is challenging, and I can actually RUN some of it. Ha!

Hey Karen, I'd like to see the pictures but when I clicked on Album it says we have to be Friends to view them.  I can't find anywhere that allows us to be "friends" :-(

Thanks for that! I couldn't find the results!

Yeah, I was slow... 4:43.... but I wasn't last! WOO-HOO! Ha!

229 out of 249. Sad, but I did it.

And 258 started. Guess I should be glad I wasn't one of those who DNFed.
