Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:00 at ate a bagel with peanu butter a banana and some coffee. Then we loaded up the car and the family and headed to Tempe from Sun city west.
Event warmup:

I got to the transition area and dropped off my special needs bags and then made sure I had my infinit on my bike.. Went to the bathroom and got body marked. Sat with another guy and chatted right by the swim start.
Swim
  • 1h 18m 22s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

Ok, so I jumped in about 2 minutes after the pros went off. It was just plain numbinly cold. I swam up to the front and held on to a kayak. I watched the clock on the side and I knew when the canon would go off. Bang off it went! I swam hard for the start and got pummelled! JUst kept on swimming and stopping as people tried to thin out Finally it thinned out around the 1000 meter mark. I just kept swimming.. Got to the first bouy and rounded it wide and took the second one wide as well and headed for home. I was getting cold and had to pee so I flopped on my back and peed. I did this 2 times and just felt like my stroke was not good.. Just kept swimming, and hoping it would be finished soon. Finally I was at the steps and was climbing out. I saw the race clock and it read 1:18, and was like, that is the pro clock and I swam 1:08.. Not, I checked my watch and it said 1:18 and i was very dissapointed. Not sure if the cold killed my swim but it was just plain bad. I was swimming sub 1:10 in the pool for 3 weeks before and my swim 2 years ago was 1:12.
What would you do differently?:

Wear a better wetsuit. I think I need a new one.
Transition 1
  • 08m 33s
Comments:

Slow, cold, could not get moving. Very poor here once again. Put on gloves, riding jersey and arm warmers. Glad I did as it was a cold windy ride.
What would you do differently?:

Not be cold.
Bike
  • 5h 26m 8s
  • 112 miles
  • 20.61 mile/hr
Comments:

These ranks are where I was during the race but not sure where I was ranked. ANy way, started easy and wanted to build pace each lap. The wind became stronger as the race went on and I just decided to ride the best I could and push the last lap. Was not feeling great as I was burping up some of my infinit during the ride after mile 50. Drank water when my stomach felt bad. Stopped 2 times on the ride to pee. THe one thing that pissed my off was a dude with the name of Cesar, drafted on me the entire ride. I would look back and he was right on my shoulder. I would shake my head and he would just stay there. I finally got rid of him near the end of the ride. THe rain came at mile 70ish and the wind was brutal. THe crosswinds coming in town were rough. Never felt like the ride was real strong for me. However, not many people were passing me on the bike. I just knew that I wanted to run well. so I drank 5 bottles of infinit and 18 shot blocks and 1 gel during the ride. I was shooting for 5 hours so a 5:26 is way off my goal and last time here I was 5:14.
What would you do differently?:

I know my bike miles were down this year and that hurt my ride.
Transition 2
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

Did the flying dismount after trying to get past 2 guys that were just not even moving down the finish shoot. Took off my bike shoes and ran to the bags. Got mine and sprinted into the tent and found a spot by the exit. Dumped out the bag and put on my injinji socks and put on the shoes and hat, and bolted. Quick transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 3h 37m 19s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 08m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Again, I don't know my run rank, just where I finished.
I started strong and Knew I needed to run well. THe whole run was great except when My stomach went bad on the 2nd lap and I had to go #2! Felt better after that. Ok, ran with Chris Lieto and he started walking and I got him going again, that was cool. Saw the leader and second place pros go by me and I cheered them on! I really felt good on the run and just staryed as strong as I could and walked a few aid stations when I needed to fuel. Saw my family every laps, which was great and the best was the sprint finish I had with another guy. He edged me out but I was glad I had something left to make a great spectacle for the fans. THen of course I look to my left and Chrissy Wellington is putting my blanket on me, at least I was able to say thanks Chrissy before they ushered me off. THe dude I sprinted with needed to be carried off and I was feeling good. Glad to be done on a tough day.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Cold pizza fries and a water. Great massage however, loved it!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cold water killed the start of the day but I came up fast in the end.

Event comments:

I was happy to finish strong! If you can go from 195th out of the water in your agegroup and finish 23rd, that is a pretty good day.

Mark,

I watched the race via the live feed all day.  That was a challenging day.  Cold water, high winds, sleet and rain.  I also tracked you throughout the day.  I was concerned when you got out of the water at 1:18 and thought you might be in trouble.  However, as the day progressed, your bike and run splits looked strong.  I wasn't planning on singing up for next year, but after tracking you and watching the race I decided to give it a go.

You are truly an inspiration!

Nice race Mark, good effort in getting faster and moving up the ranking as the race went on.  I know how brutal that wind must have been on the bike.  Just standing there all day, cheering and taking photos, I could feel it getting worse each lap.  Congrats on the strong finish!

Excellent race Mark.  Sorry to hear you weren't happy with your swim, but you certainly didn't let it ruin the rest of your day!  The wind was definitely tough out there as I was hoping for a faster bike split as well, but there's not much we can do about the conditions.

Very cool that you got Lieto going too!  Congrats once again.

really nice job Mark!  Sorry the swim didn't go as well as you hoped.  But you sure hammered out the bike and run.  Great day for you on what I understand were not perfect conditions.

Sorry to hear about your swim, Mark.  Mine wasn't good either. You must have felt like a pro passing everyone in the field on the bike and run though.  I moved up over 400 spots on the bike... and you must have passed even more!

I've been in AZ for all the November races and this one, by far, had the toughest conditions.  The bike especially was just brutal at times.

It was nice meeting you.  Hopefully we'll race again in the future!  Congrats on another great IM performance.
