I am in a dilemma between road bikes and need your help. My dilemma rests between the 2010 Giant Defy2 and the 2011 Trek 1.5. I have had an opportunity to take both for a spin and consider them both equally comfortable and fit correctly, considering the short duration of time in the saddle. Both are from LBS that offer pretty much the same exact warranty and have excellent customer service. So with that said, whats your experience with this/these bike(s) and bike vs bike which would you go with if all other variables(Fit,cost, etc.) were the same and why?

Giant Defy2(2010)
Trek 1.5(2011)

wow- they're pretty closely spec'ed bikes.
You couldn't go wrong with either.

Both brands make quality products.  Buy whichever one has the color scheme that appeals to you, or whichever brand speaks to you desires more.  If you still can't decide,
ask your LBS which one he'd be willing to throw in a set of (clipless) pedals on to close the deal.

Other than the best deal you can get and the color you like most, the only consideration ( a very minor consideration) I can think of is resale.

I think (sometimes) used Treks sell better than used Giants. Everyone from kids to grandmas have heard of Trek bikes. The Trek may be easier to sell once you've got your use out of it.... or not. I've sold alot of my used bikes and non-biking or new bike people just seem to think Trek is the best bike in the world.

Sell a bike?  Not own it any more?  That's crazy talk.

Haven't you heard of n+1?

haha!
You and a friend of mine think alike! My buddy has run out of locations to screw in big hooks and hang bikes in his garage. The garage is a modern art piece.

I'm a bit biased, as I ride a Giant for a road bike, but I'm sure either would work out well.

My first road bike (still have) was the Defy 1.  Either trek or giant I would spend a couple hundred extra and step up to the shimano 105 components (trek 2.1 or defy 1).  My daughter has tiagra on her road bike and I hate them.  I am adjusting the derailer everytime she rides.

Hey everyone,

So I was in the neighborhood of another LBS today and to my surprise another bike was thrown into the mix of my bike dilemma Frown So I was looking through the shop and was talking to the owner and he said he was putting together a tri bike in the back. To my surprise its a 2010 Giant Trinity 1 frame, fork, seat post, and saddle, 105 components, BUT with road bike handlebars and road wheels/tires. So my dilemma now rests between the 2010 Giant Defy 2(Stock) and this "Custom" Giant Trinity 1. I've been quoted $1000 for the Defy 2 and $1300 for the "Custom" Trinity 1 and was wondering if this seems odd to anyone else and is he trying to rip me off? Or did I get lucky and find a good deal?

The Trinity 1 retails for 1400 and change, so the difference between rip off and deal depends on what wheels/tires and bars are replaced for stock.

Did you ask why he was puting road bars on a tri specific geometry frame?

It seems a little fishy to me, but if the bike were to fit you well, you could add clip on aero bars and have the convenience of road brak/shifters (for group rides etc) and a close to good aero position on the clipon's because of the shorter reach/steeper angle seat tube.

Yeah, he said he put road bars on so it could be used for both road and tri instead of just tri. Which makes sense in a cycling dominant city.

Wheels: Giant rims w/ 105 Hubs(Not worried about tires)
Handlebars: Giant Contact Road w/ 105 shifters

Will this be your only bike?  If so, I would sugest that you go with a road bike and either the Giant or Trek will serve you well.

Personally I would not even consider a bike with a steep seattube angle setup with road bars.  If you want a road bike, get a road bike and if you want a tribike, get a tribike.

Having just made my decision on a new bike in that price range, I went with the new 2011 Felt F75, mostly because of the rear carbon seat stays, and the 2011 bikes have the new 105 components, of which the shifters are more ergonomical, and have internal cable routing. Very nice. I got the felt at $1259 from a LBS, and I was also looking at a 2010 Trek 2.1 for $1099, but for the reasons above, I went with the Felt. Also, the shop with the Felt is a more tri specific Shop, and I felt i'd get a better fit done from them.
