hey, i did my first olympic yesterday in Durban, South Africa. It was great! I did about 6-7 sprints before to build up to it though. (Also one DNF on a prior attempted OlyCry) My dream is to do an IRONMAN one day...
How many olys should one do before progressing to 1/2 IM or ultras?

Congratulations on your first olympic and the races to come! As for you question, it really depends. There's some who have done a HIM or IM without ever doing a sprint or oly. I've only done one olympic and I'm training to do my first IM without having done a HIM yet. It really depends on the base and the training. Do you have a specific goal in mind, whether it be to finish in a certain amount of time?

Congrats!!  If you have an OLY under your belt, you should be able to do a HIM with the proper training.  The jump is not that great, in my opinion.

With the standard disclaimers that individual results may vary, and having the time to train, I did my first HIM in my second season of Triathlon. I had done 4 sprints and an Oly. It can be done. That standard disclaimer of having the time and dedication to train really is the key. In order to step up to that distance without getting injured, it is important to give yourself enough time to ramp up. I found this to be especially true with the run.

Depends on how long you want to do this stuff. A common work up is
sprints
OLY
HIM
IM

so 4 to 5 years from 1st tri to IM. One of the things you want to consider is how soon you want to get to the point of, "Now what?" Push off the IM for a few years so you don't get there too soon

Congrats on your first oly.  I did an oly as my first tri and plan to do a HIM and IM in 2011.

IMO, the better trained you are for a distance, the less prior race experience factors in to your performance.

hi, thanks for the replies everybody.
At this stage I don’t put too much emphasis on times. Just finishing well and enjoying the races is cool. I come from a non sporty background (stopped smoking etc. about 3 years back...)
so building up just makes sence to me, even if its more mentally maybe.
Anyhowz, thanks again and enjoy your training.

Nice job.

What's the story on the DNF?   If you don't mind me asking.

Congrats on the first of many successful Triathlons.

Between Oly and HIM, the skills to be successful in the swim are about the same. (+500m).  The bike is a longer, but depending on the course and you bike experience, this is not a deal breaker.  In my opinion a 13.1 mile run is a big step up from the 10k distance of the Oly.

Enjoy the journey.
