Subject: RE: luck selling bike online or on BT? I've sold two bikes and a set of wheels here and on ST. Never sold anything on ebay. One or two back and forths about price, no one really lowballing me. Packaged by my LBS and shipped via the Staples right beside my LBS. Whether you are going to wait or you get close to what you're asking depends on way too many things to be of any help. |

Right before Christmas versus June. Type of item, $400 new bike or $10,000 new bike I'll bet they sell differently Too many things variable. The stuff I sold went both immediately and after a few weeks as well as on the second listing three months later. |

Champion 7233 | Subject: RE: luck selling bike online or on BT? over the years, both mine and others, i've sold 5 bikes online. 1 through ebay, 1 on craigs, 1 on BT, and two through ST. I've got an acceptable amount each time, and only once was shipping a pain (frame going into canada and size issues). |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: luck selling bike online or on BT? I've sold one bike here on BT, one bike on Craigslist, and most of the parts of another bike on Ebay. Make sure you have a comprehensive list of specs, parts, approximate mileage on all of it, really good pics, and closeups of any flaws. People really appreciate extras like saddlebags, bike computer, etc. and in my opinion it lubes the purchase so to speak Craigslist--people will want to see the bike so they'll come to your house. Are you okay with that? Also, anything CL = CASH, all of it, on the spot, only. Be VERY clear about what your stated price on CL means. Firm, best offer, etc. I like selling stuff to people on BT because you often know each other or there's just a couple degrees of separation. However, this is probably the slowest place to sell stuff. Ebay be prepared to know your bike really, really, really well--there was a fair bit of back and forth just on parts. You are unlikely to get what you feel your bike is worth on Ebay, and it might not sell at all. Also, if you haven't sold a fair amount of stuff on Ebay, people tend to steer clear of you. Look up 2005 Felts and other similar steeds and see whether they've been selling, what for, etc. |

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: luck selling bike online or on BT? I did ok... Of course not as much as I would have liked. Everyone wants to low ball... Also, as a tip, if you ship the bike, look into the costs BEFORE you negotiate a price. My shipping costs were a bit higher than I thought, and it cut pretty deeply into what I wanted to make on the bike. However, I never rode it, so it was just nice to get some room in the garage and a couple bucks in my pocket (in the long run) |

Pro 5011 Twin Cities | Subject: RE: luck selling bike online or on BT? I've sold all my bikes on Craiglist. Sold two pairs of race wheels on TNO, back in the day. Never had any problem in any of the cases. Got asking price. Easy peasy. ETA: For bikes, I prefer CL if at all possible as there is no hassle with shipping, there's no risk of it selling for less than you want it to sell for (as in an auction), and it's free (there's no third party--ebay or paypal--taking a cut of the sale). In both cases where I sold wheels on TNO, I "knew" the buyer relatively well and wasn't worried about getting ripped off or anything. Edited by mmrocker13 2010-12-07 3:01 PM |

If someone wants to buy something and the cost is $1000, then they will go to the bank and get the cash. The whole purpose of craigslist to me is the no cost part. As someone else said nobody else gets a "cut". Not paypal or ebay. This year alone I have sold stuff on craigslist, several things on ebay, but I have not had to use BT or ST yet. Craigslist to me is the best way. It is local, free, and you get to see the buyer face to face. That way there is no confusion over the condition of the item. If you don't want someone coming to your house then meet them at a coffee shop or parking lot. Oh and I always do this during the day, never after sundown. |

Champion 10018 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: luck selling bike online or on BT? I sold my tri bike on BT. I didn't even put it in the classifieds, I don't think.. Just sold it on my state forum. I had mentioned it once and then a BT friend's sister asked about it. In that case I took a check because I knew the woman's sister well enough that I felt like I could follow-up if need be and she was very nice and trustworthy. I liked this arrangement because of the familiarity. I find Craigslist supremely annoying as far as answering questions, setting up appointments, etc. But that was going to be my next step. |

Master 1526 Bolivia, NC | Subject: RE: luck selling bike online or on BT? Bought my first bike on Craigslist and check Craigslist every day to see what might pop up in my area. On the other hand I only look at the BT classifieds every once in a while. I'd try Craigslist first unless you are in a remote area with a small population. I'm afraid I don't know where Malvern, PA is. |

Regular 113 NYC | Subject: RE: luck selling bike online or on BT? I bought my first tri-bike on Craigslist. After letting it sit for a year I actually used it for the second year. When it was time to upgrade I put it on Craigslist at 10pm and someone paid me my asking price (the same amount I bought it for two years earlier) the next day at 11am. Fast and painless. |

Member 313 Ventura County, California | Subject: RE: luck selling bike online or on BT? Totally agree with TriAya. I've sold bikes and frames on Ebay and Craigs List. Ebay is great if you want to get top dollar and don't mind the shipping hassles. You will get exposure to a large market. I'm always surprised at what people are willing to pay for used stuff on Ebay. TriAya's post is very true regarding specs and pics. People feel more comfortable bidding higher if they feel you are being thorough and honest in you description. If you don't care about top dollar, just want some quick cash without the shipping hassle... go Craigs List. If your listing price is a good deal, you could sell it quickly on CL... if your asking top dollar, don't expect a lot of calls. Craigs List is a much smaller audience, so the odds of someone looking for your bike, size, etc is smaller. |

Extreme Veteran 386 West Hartford, CT | Subject: RE: luck selling bike online or on BT? I sold my fixed gear bike on Craigs List. It took a little which wasn't surprising given that it was a fixie, but I didn't mind waiting because I didn't want to hassle with shipping it. Definitely only take cash. If someone wants it, they'll find a way. I sold my car on Craig's List for around $2,800 (it was an old car) and I had the cash in my hands less than 24 hours after posting. |

Veteran 266 Kingwood, TX | Subject: RE: luck selling bike online or on BT? I agree with the earlier post that top dollar will be on ebay. Good pictures and a good description will do wonders. Get a box from an LBS and pack it yourself. Look at what others are charging for S&H to get an idea of what to charge. I have sold 2 bikes on ebay and never had an issue. Just set you minimum price and let it go from there. |
