Damn this pathetic showing of snow in SE Michigan. If it's going to be cold, we need 2+ feet of accumulation at least. The amount of fun to be had outside increases exponentially with every 6 inches of snow.

Speaking of the weather, has anyone tried the hex screws on the bottom of your running shoes trick? Is it worth trying or should I just "play in the road" or keep to the treadmill?

Neither, get a pair of YakTrax and run where ever you want!  I just put them on my trail shoes and am doing the first snow run of the season this afternoon.  I saw that Costco had an off brand set of these that were less expensive , but still had the same coil design.

x2 on the Yak Trax.  I've been wearing them the last few weeks running 25-30 miles a week and still have never run on a treadmill in my life.  IMO though the Yaks are awesome on snowed over gravel roads or unplowed snow.  I find them a bit unstable and too noticeable under my foot when they come in contact with uncovered cement or asphalt.

But I feel Trixie's sentiment though...strong winds, blowing snow...I'm usually happy to be done this time of year.

I'd be happier if we could some more snow.  Cross country ski trails were barely skiable on Thursday and after this weekend may be worn  down to much for the nice skis.

I never use my Yak Traks, but find these great for running on icy, snow, and clear patches of walk's around the neighborhood:

Running Fit carries them, but you may find them cheaper online.  Carbide spikes are replaceable which I haven't done as of yet and I've used them for two winters, so I may consider it this season.

Yaktrax PRO

Huge difference, in my opinion. Also, when its getting real cold, a layer of duct tape over the top of the shoe helps to keep the wind and incidental splashes away.

Skip the screws, they aren't nearly as useful as the trax.

Totally agree!

Great duct tape suggestion.  Thanks Matt.

Kahtoola Microspikes FTW!

I've been logging 40+ weekly miles the last few weeks, mostly on trails.

Went out and splurged on a pair of YakTraks pro, paid a little more than I wanted to but bought them on a gift card. Ran for the first time this morning using them and all I can say is how freakin awesome are those things. Wise investment; thanks for the advice.
