I'm in for the Sprint. will be only my second triathlon ever and first OWS. Getting pumped about this race. I guess I need to start training now.

Wife is doing the Olympic on Sunday so we'll make it a mini race vacation.

Anyone know of a good yet cheap hotel near the boardwalk?  I used to have a hookup but she switched jobs.

Thanks KeriKadi! Remember OUL (Onurleft Sports) writes a heck of a good training plan.... OUM (Onurmark Productions) puts on a heckofa race! Since we've started as OUL putting on the races and transitioned to OUM everyone still thinks it's OUL that does it. I guess people see them as the same. Either it's all good and either way you rock and THANKS for the post! We can't wait. 2nd Annual Memorial Hermann Gateway Tri will be the best yet! We just hired 15 new coordinators to work the events and an entire labor force to support them. Is it April yet?

Very nice.... thanks for the plug! It's not that tough, you'll be fine. It's right at the end. I have to do something different... 1) It was pretty dangerous coming down the bridge slamming on your brakes and making a sharp turn to go under. Although fun it's much safer to run it. 2) It's a $32,000 Pro Purse, Alcatraz Spots, and $10,000 in Invitational prizes plus some sweet shirts, packets, and awesome medals. It's got to be challenging. Just think of how nice it will be to run fast down the last part of the bridge and coast into the finish line!

Another little gem.... I'm pretty close (not 100% yet) to securing the paddleboat from Galveston for the event so we will "most likely" have one big multi-level boat instead of a bunch of little ones. This also means that we may try to do it Alcatraz style where once you jump off your time starts and you just go. 1-2 minutes between waves but everyone goes pretty fast. EVEN MORE FUN!

You always keep us guessing.  I was just telling a friend that the boat start wasn't too bad because I was only around women and they are SO much nicer in the water, we spread out and there was less contact in that race than any other I have done.  I guess that will change as well.  Ah well, it's all good, I am sure I will have a great time and look forward to the swag.

You'll still be grouped by your wave starts (age and gender) just a time trial start within your age group which should spread you out more. Then 1-2 minutes between your waves. No hesitation when jumping though. You'll cross the mats as you approach the edge so if you don't jump you'll be wasting time. PLUS you know I have to always keep you all guessing out there, makes life interesting!

You made it in based on the date you posted this. It looks like the first 100 will be getting TYR Ruck Sacks. Pretty cool bag that TYR just came out with.

Oh and some other updates that are important for those of you doing the race.

1. It's now called the Memorial Hermann Kemah Triathlon Festival.

2. Sprint race is a normal 500meter swim counterclockwise. Filling fast don't wait too long to register.

3. International Distance Boat start - We're 99% sure it's from the paddlewheel boat in Galveston. 100% confirmation in the next one to two days. That means it's truly Alcatraz style. The pros will jump off first in their own wave followed 30-60 seconds later by a wave of the invitational athletes. After that it's all the rest of the athletes crossing the timing mat on the deck and leaping from the boat feet first to start their swim. Your time starts when you cross the mat. All 800-1,000 athletes will be on this amazing boat. Plenty of room. GREAT FUN! One loop bikes and runs for all courses this year with amazing medals.

Terenzo Bozzone, Chris Lieto, Tim Deboom, Andrew Yoder, Viktor Zyemtsev, Brian Fleischmann, Becky Lavelle, Desiree Ficker, Pip Taylor, Jasmine Oeinck, and Laura Tingle have all confirmed to race for the $32,000 purse. Should be an epic battle!

Discount registration days at Houston Cycling Centres and your chance to win a brand new Trek Speed Concept Triathlon Bike in conjunction with the Houston Food Bank.

Save $10 plus online registration fees (close to $20 in savings) by bringing 10 canned food items for the Houston Food Bank when you stop in one of Houston Cycling Centre's three bike shops Saturday February 12, 2011 and register for the Kemah Triathlon Festival (former Gateway to the Bay). You may also register to win a Trek Speed Concept Triathlon Bike valued at $3,000 courtesy of Houston Cycling Centers and Onurmark Productions. The bike drawing will be held during the awards ceremony for the Houston Triathlon Championship in late September and the winner must be present to win.

Oh yeah it's like a 1 min walk to transition. Nice place too. Brand new. Hope you're doing the International on Sunday! They will both be fun but the Sunday race is going to be epic!

I'm doing the Sprint and going to be a fan for Sunday's International with all the pro's. I raced the International distance last year and it was a blast.

I will probably regret my decision but it will be fun no matter what.

Sweet! That's good news about the Hotel.  Bringing the whole family. We are going to make a weekend of it. Coming in Friday and leaving Sunday.

I'm doing the OLY on Sunday.  I'm really looking forward to the deep water start. It will be my first salt water swim...a little nervous about that.

I have a Volt sleeveless wet suit, do you think that will be fine?

Any other tips about preping for the salt water swim? I will be doing OW swimming between now and then, but I've read about chaffing in salt water, anything to be concern about?

Nah you're fine. Should be low to mid 70's as long as this cold gets out of here. I haven't swam in much salt water myself so I couldn't tell you. I like the great lakes races like Chicago, Steelhead, Rev3 isn't bad either. CapTex is good around here and Dallas Open is great I heard. As for the swimming.... we're putting on a pre race clinic the weekend before where you can swim the sprint course for practice and run some of the course too. We'll talk about the race itself as well. It's on the 27th and you can signup on our site. www.KemahTri.com same as you would for the race but choose the clinic.

The only thing to prep for a salt water swim is to get use to the taste of salt water. If you're not it could make you a bit sick if you take in too much. But, once use to it, it seems to not affect people anymore.
