Just a thought:  Have you considered purchasing an existing shop versus attempting a start-up?

A shop owner with an established product line & customer base who is looking for an exit strategy, say for retirement, might be receptive to offers.

I have definitely thought of this as well.  We are in the infant stages of planning.  Everyone here has made some good points about service and selecting brands that are not represented.  What I was looking for and received were ideas of full line brands that I had not yet though of pursuing.  I am currently in the bike business at another angle so I am getting my feet wet as far as the business end goes.

A brand ????????like ????????Orbea? I had never thought about, now I can seriously consider this.  We are still at least two years out from opening a door for stocking the shelves.?
