I think the longest I have run so far is 9 miles back in December.  About to start working my way back up to that.

I hit 15.5 miles back in December training for my first half marathon.  I had water and a gel along the way.  Felt great during the run but think I parked myself on the couch the rest of that day.

PR'd a 5K today.  Best in 14 years.  USTAF certified course. so legit.  20:46,  33 degrees and raining.  Quite miserable.  Aiming for sub 20 later this year, so a good start!

Pretty good training weekend.  Saturday I rode for about an hour & fifteen minutes on the trainer.  Sunday, I ran 4 miles and then did about 1700 in the pool.

This was a recovery week in my traning plan for the 15-k in three weeks. Distances start to ramp up again this week.  Long run is 9 miles this Saturday and 10 miles next  Saturday.

I PR'd on Saturday as well in a 10k.  Although, I've only run one other 10k during an olympic tri so I stood a good chance of beating that time.  Like Knewbike's race this course was also recently certified - and hilly.  I managed a 41:28 along with 1st in AG and 7th OA (of 300+ runners).  VERY happy about this race!  2011 has been very good to me so far.  Nailed my first half maratahon and snagged a 5k and 10k PR so far!

Started off my new training plan with a BANG this morning...by sleeping and skipping my morning run.

Too cold out, bed too comfortable, and legs crazy sore from our first intramural soccer game yesterday.  Those are muscles that you just don't use when you run straight and slowly!

Planning on a 3 mile easy run this afternoon when I get off work.

Holy cow, still so sore from our soccer game Sunday!  Needed help to get out of bed this morning.  Planning on an easy ride on the trainer this afternoon.

I've been terrible about posting here... My apologies. I've tried to stay consistent with my schedule, at least 3 runs and 2 bikes each week. Logs tell the story. Had a little foot issue last week, and I think it's cleared up now.

I think it's time to pick up the mentor group...being a triathlete means your an endurance sports participant...so we should know how to stay around and keep posting for the long haul!!!

How is everyone's training?  Any road blocks??

Have a couple questions.

First- did a nice 30 mile ride on Saturday, but felt like I hit the wall at mile 25.  Went from averaging 18 straight down to 16.5 or slower.  It seemed rather sudden, and not related to legs burning/headwind/uphill.  I took one gel halfway at mile 15 and had one waterbottle of gatorade.  I was hoping it was due to nutrition and not just my body giving up.  Anyone else have this happen?

Also. Trying to do more running in HR zone 2.  Should I

A: keep cadence high but shorten my steps to decrease effort OR

B: keep stride longer like my normal race stride and decrease my cadence?

It sounds like you may have "bonked" on your ride. Usually, when one bonks, speed drops dramatically and you just CAN'T get it back up. You want to get off the bike and just wait for some one to come get you... The gel and G'ade may have saved you from a really hard bonk. I'd suggest starting the nutrition earlier and maybe throw down another one before you get to that point. General cycling wisdom is that if you wait for hunger or thirst, it's too late.

On the run... Longer stride tends to go hand-in-hand with more stress on the legs. I'd vote for keeping the cadence high and adjust stride length.

I felt similar to Mary on my bike that day but it was only briefly and there actually wasn't any sudden slow down.  I just had an odd lightheaded feeling but it passed after a few minutes.  Which was good b/c that was at the turnaround about 25 miles away from the car.  I had pretty good nutrition with me, 2 gels, a pack of shot blocs, a water bottle and a bottle of water/Nuun mix.  It was all gone by the end.  Does that sound about right for being on the bike for 2:40:00 or so?

That 50 miler was my longest to date.  Still considering the 100k ride in early April.  There will be lots of aid stations so I won't be without assistance.  It's getting caught up in a group and feeling like I should stick with them that'll probably get me.  I want to finish, not wear the yellow jersey!  Either way, I am WAY ahead of where I was this time last year.  Of course last year this time we didn't even own a bike yet.

I had a killer training weekend. Best one in more than a year. On Saturday, I rode 20 miles with my newbie triathlete buddy and his spanking new CAAD 9. It was a pretty slow go, and I had to sit and wait for him at the tops of some of the bigger hills while he figured out his gears, dropped his chain, and "joined the club" a time or two. But, at the end, he was stoked and had ridden the farthest ever in his life, so that was fun.

On Sunday morning, he and I ran 10 miles together. It was my longest run since my HIM in 2009 and his longest run ever.

On Sunday afternoon I took my kid to swim class, and I had planned to just do an easy swim since my legs were pretty thrashed. I ended up swimming about 1800 yards altogether, although some of that was with a pull buoy.

Just did an easy 30 minute spin on the bike and some stretches today.

Looking forward to the 15-k next Sunday and I can't wait for tri season to get here already. First race isn't until JUNE!

Thanks for the advice.  So I just I assumed that bonking feels bad. Like when you run a few miles way too fast and just can't keep going.   It was odd that I didn't feel any different as far as the legs and lungs were concerned, but I was just going slower.

I took it easy last week and even took the weekend off.  I needed a break both physically and mentally.  After last Monday's hilly 7 mile run my right heel was pretty tender and it hurt to walk or stand on it.  Ice, no running and ibuprofen have brought me pretty much back to normal (no noticeable pain).  Swimming and biking didn't aggravate the issue so I kept up with those.

Tomorrow AM I've got a run scheduled.  Going to test it out but if it hurts even the slightest bit I'll probably stop and go home.  Anybody else ever have similar pain?  If so, got any good news for me?

Good news, I ran this AM with no pain (see my post above).

I was tempted to keep running but I figured 20 minutes was enough and didn't want to push it.  No pain during, immediately after or now.  Best 20 minute run I've had.

AWESOME!!!!!

Good idea not to push it...push it tomorrow or the next day a bit more (Assuming no pain)
