Good morning all! So how is everyone's training going? Hope your weather is better then here in Wis. I have a trail run coming up on the 17th and looks like we might have snow on the ground yet.

Have all the IM people started their training programs yet?

Finally got 2 decent back to back weeks in! Starting to build up the time/mileage. I am doing 8-9 hours week right now. Problem is that I am so tired all the time now both overall and my muscularly in my legs. I can't imagine doubling that. My question is: Does the tiredness go away or am is it going to be like this for 22 more weeks?

BTW, 3 hours on a trainer really sucks but I am such a wuss that its got to warm up a lot before I would ride for that long outside.

Are you doing a recovery week every 3 or 4 weeks?

I remember the long bike rides, I would start out on the trainer since it was dark outside yet. Then finish up outside with a 4 hour ride in order to get the 6 hour rides in. Also a few 3 am runs, all in an attempt to keep the impact on the family down.

Eat well and try to get to bed early, hope it will get better.

Great advice on the long rides, I never thought of starting on the trainer and finishing outside.

As far as recovery, there is my dilemma. Paul Huddle's Start to Finish plan has a recovery every 3rd week. Fink's BeIronFit is every fourth week (which is more common including the BT plans) I think my body would be better suited to the 3rd week recovery and I could even go harder the two other weeks, knowing the recovery is around the corner. I asked about the Huddle plan on the IM forum and got only a couple of responses that it seems solid. I am just nervous doing a plan that few people around here have done. Fink's seems to be the favorite.

What are your thoughts on a plan with every 3rd week recovery?

I think every 3 weeks would be a good idea. Your main goal is to get to the starting line healthy. If you run yourself down too much trying to get every workout in you could end up injured and end up missing more in the long run. Listen to your body, your main goal is to finish.

My plan has a recovery week every 4th week as well, but to be honest, my rhythm seems more like a every third week as a recovery.  I am up to around 8 or 9 hours a week, which I think is a touch low.  My "issue" is that I am not getting both a long run and long bike in right now.  Generally only a long run.  Your suggestion about the start on the trainer is great... will definitely push divorce proceedings out a couple more months!  jk.

I did do a half iron distance pool swim on Monday, an was at about 45 minutes at an easy pace.  I am really happy with the swim progress.

Good Monday morning all. I see they moved us back to Archives, if anyone wants to continue on with this group I can see how I can get us moved back.

Have a 15K off road race this weekend. Not sure what to expect, could still be some snow in the woods yet. If the snow is gone, I am sure it will be muddy.

Lumber,
It seems like not much action on this thread, but if you want to keep it open, I will be happy to contribute. Thanks for all the advice and encouragement. I got outside finally for a 3:20 bike ride, unfortunately the last half was into a 25mph head win that just toasted me. I had to take yesterday off just to recover. Also, had the pleasure of a guy almost hitting me with his car (made a right turn in front of me even though he had a stop sign and I had none) and an off leash dog on a path coming into my lane and forcing me into the grass while in the aero position. I barely avoided, felt like Lance Armstrong on the Cote de la Rochette in 2003.

It was nice to be outside, but I think I am going to do my short rides on the trainer this year, it allows me more intensity, more safety and less setup time. Kind of a shame.

I will gladly contribute as well.  I really enjoy all of your comments and encouragement!

BTW, I fried my legs this weekend... perhaps too much (FR 5.5 mi run, Sat 7.5 run, Sun 9 run).  No injury, just sore!  Keep it up everyone!

Looks like you are getting some nice training in. I will keep checking in here, guess we will just be located in the Archives section. I will let everyone else know that we are still here.

Solid until this week... life has kicked in.  That's okay, because I needed a light week; next week will be one of ramped up intensity...

15K trail race yesterday. Wow, hilliest running race ever. Thats the fun of off road running.

Since today is the Boston Marathon, anyone have that on their list of things to do?

Got that done when I was younger and a lot faster.

I watched part of the Boston Marathon again this year, which I have done since we moved to this neck of the woods.  I always use it as a motivator, and it really gets the competitive juices flowing.  This year I ran to the race course after doing a quick spin on the trainer, to create a messed up brick of sorts (45m on a trainer, 50m of running).  I got there in time to see the leading men go through, and a fair number of the elites.  I am always in awe of how effortless those guys look...

To answer your question directly, I would love to run Boston some day.  I would likely go the charity route (pretty easy to find a slot around here if you are willing to raise the money), just because it would be a two or so year process for me to qualify.  I think I can run that fast, but never have, and I would have to really focus on the running.  I think I like the three sport combo, better.

Congrats on the race!  I am itching to compete, but mine is still six weeks out.

That is so cool you got to see some of the race. Some fast times this year, nice to the some Americans finishing near the top.

It is fun... when I heard the weather this morning, I told my wife it would be a perfect day for the race.  Sunny, about 50-55ish for most of the race, with a good tailwind.  As one of the commentators said during the telecast, the marathon is not about endurance but speed.  Feels that way even to the Ironman distance, at least for the pros!
