We finished 2nd-no thanks to me! I lost 11 minutes on the swim! I'm not really that bummed out at my time, I just wish the other teams weren't so fast. It was a great experience.  I'm looking forward to completing my first tri.

Mike, how was the St. George bike course?  Are you ready for the Ironman?  The good news is Ironman St. George isn't the hardest Ironman...it is second.

The St. George bike course is tough. The roads are rough and that is not fun. I did really well until I hit what is called "the wall" by the locals. It is a 3/4 mile hill that gets steeper as you climb. I think it hits a 12 to 16% grade depending on who you talk to. I am happy to say that I made it up the hill. I rode from Sand Hallow and then did one loop. Total miles was 74 miles in 4 1/2 hours. I felt good at the end of the ride. That is the longest ride I have ever done. There are some good hills on the course but again the big one is "the wall".

Also I am praying that there is no winds. I hit 30-35 mph winds the day I rode.  I am feeling ready for the race. Of course I am scared, nervous and excited for my 1st IM. I think I will be able to finish between 13 and 14 hours. I was sick the week after the St. George ride and missed a week of training and then this Sat I cracked my handlebars and so my bike is in the shop getting fixed. I am worried about missing training even though it is trapering. I can only do what I can do. So bring it on!

Glad you were able to get out and ride the course beforehand.  That experience will be crucial come race day.  Don't sweat the missed workouts too much.  You can't lose a whole lot of fitness at this point.  The workouts during the taper are just to keep the body sharp.  As long as you can squeeze a little something in you should be fine.  I can't wait to hear how it goes in a couple of weeks!

Do you guys wear ear plugs when you swim? My upcoming race is going to be cold, and I hear its tough to run to T1 after you have freezing water in your ears... if so, what kind?

OK, Well I AM AN IRONMAN!!!.

It was a long tough day for me. It started to go bad on Thurs. when after eating out, in St. George, I noticed that my stomach was not acting right. I was feeling a little bloated and well sick. I thought I was just nervous for the race. Friday I started vomiting, although it made me feel much better I was worried. Again I though I was just nervous. Then Friday night I bent over to pick up my 3 y.o. girl and of course there goes my back. I have had back problems for years and years, it always just goes out like that. I had thought that I had maybe gotten over the back problems has I have not had any in about 9 months, but there it was the night before my big race and my left hip was now about 1-2 inches higher than my right. The only good news is, swimming usually makes it feel sooo much better. Needless to say I did not sleep much that night, maybe an hour, back pain and nerves about Sat.

The swim ended up being very nice. I ended up cramping twice and one time I actually signaled a boarder to come help me, but before he could get to me it passed. I ended up with a 1:11 on the swim, I was very happy with that time. So out of the water and I'm heading for the transition and all I can focus on is how horrible my stomach felt. I was very very bloated and was now having cramping. I jumped on the bike and wow it hurt to just bend over and hang on to the handlebars. The crowd was cheering so I took off. After about 16 miles and a three good climbs latter I was launching everything in my stomach on to the side of the road. I stopped at the next port o potty. All I could get out was air. So this was my rhythm, I would stop at every aid station at get rid of a lot of air. The road were of course rough and the pro's went by me like they were on motorcycles, I am happy to say that I began to feel better as the day went by. I manages to ride "the wall" both times. I knew I was going very slow, but I was doing it so I enjoyed myself as much as possible. My bike time was an epic 8 hours, bike cpu said total ride time was 7 hours, that is an hour on the pot!  I also blow a tire at about mile 90, thankfully it was as I was passing an aid station and it had bike repair guys there. They had a new tire and tube on my bike by the time it took me to walk the 50 yards back to there station.

The run was long. I had used Biofreeze on my back at both transitions and a the bike special needs, so it was feeling ok. The heat was killing me. I remembered watching Chris McCormack using sponges at Kona so That is what I did. At every aid station I got 2 sponges and drenched myself in the ice cold water, then I would put one on each shoulder. The temp was 91 and the sponges would be dry at the next aid station. One of the best things was a Popsicle at mile 7 and 20. The heat continued even after the sun went down. My brother told me later that I passed 260 people on the run. The hills were killer. In the end I was running walking with 3 guys, and at the 25 mile marker we started to walk and one guys says you know if we hurry we will be under 15 hours, we have 10 minutes to do this last mile. So we started running again and made it at 14:57. Very very amazing feeling running down that hill for the last few hundred yards and the announcer saying "Mike your an ironman!" 

Just over a week later and I am finally back to myself. The stomach issue lasted until last Sunday, and the back is almost back to normal. I am still tired after a long day at work but already thinking about training again. I think I will do a half in the fall and then try and get a spot for IM Coeur d'Alene next year.

I borrowed a bike for my 1st two triathlon's and am now looking for a bike. Any suggestions. Tribike or road? I was using a Specialized full carbon tarmac pro, with SRAM red. Very nice bike.

I personally love my felt B16 tri bike.  Its the lowest level carbon frame tri bike.  I love getting on it every day that i do , and miss being on it the days i dont.  Just my experience.

That is good to know, I am looking at the  Felt B16. It looks good and is only $2200. If I go with that bike do I do it online or go to a bike shop?

LBS! Then you might get a decent fit...

Hope everybody's season is off to a great start!  Just had my first tri ever a few weeks ago, it was awesome!  Now I can't wait for my next one in June!

A couple lessons I learned:

1. When exiting the water, don't immediately remove your earplugs.  Otherwise, the photograph of you will look like you are digging in your ears. 

2. When turning your racebelt from back (bike) to front (run), don't grab the number itself.  You might just rip it like I did.
