My father and I are going down to Phoenix (Casa Grande, actually) for the first week of January to visit relatives that live there, and we are bringing our bikes down to get in base miles and hill riding. I have looked at some of the routes on map my ride. I was wondering if any of you had any tips for riding in the area, e.g. driver friendliness, roads to avoid or hit up, etc.

Also, I was wondering about good bike shops in the area

If you want hills and don't want to drive too far, drive to Ahwatukee....take the 202/Pecos exit from the I-10 and go West.  Park in the Pecos/40th St Park & Ride.  Once on your bikes, you can ride west on Pecos--it is a fantastic road, and you'll probably see tons of other riders.  If you want a hill, make a right (the only way but straight) at Desert Foothills, you'll go up a little of the side of South Mountain.  Follow it all the way around and you'll get a nice downhill too.

What kind of distance are you looking at, and how fast?  I sometimes ride out there, and have an informal group.  But there are several groups that do, and many individual riders too.
