Is anyone on here from Kansas City? My husband and I are moving out there next month, probably to Overland Park / Johnson County area. I've done a few sprint tris on my own, but am excited to potentially have other people to train with. A friend of mine in CO and I are talking about doing Ironman 70.3 Kansas in June.

I live in St. Joseph, which is about an hour north.

I think Reece lives in that part of town.  I'm sure he'll pipe up and say hi.  I think there are 3 tri clubs in the KC area.  I met some people from one of them last year and haven't heard boo since then.  Your mileage may vary.

This is a good place to start, and try posting on the Kansas and Missouri sub forums too especially.

I live here in Lenexa, KS. Right in Johnson county...... Just moved here about 2 months ago from Winnipeg, Manitoba, though I did live here about 15 years ago. Lenexa and Johnson county are my favorite location that I have lived over the last 39 years.

If you're looking for a run or bike, I'm always up for a run. I live right next to Shawnee Mission Park and it's a great location for pretty much any activity.

I'll be learning the local races this year, as when I lived here before I was not nearly as active as I am now.

Welcome to KC !

Welcome to the KC area Jen.  I work in Olathe, live in Overland Park.  There are lots of races during the season.  I am training for the Olathe Marathon/Kansas 70.3.  I have heard great stuff about the Kansas 70.3, Chrissy Wellington did that race last year and the year before.

I swim with a masters group in Olathe so if you want to improve/keep up your swimming fitness it's a great group to work wth.

I lived in Fresno from 1991 to 2003 so I'm sure we've been to similar places (Yosemite, Sequoia etc.).

This place is fantastic, the schools are top notch and the food, oh the food......I have to s/b/r to work off the BBQ!

Fellow Kansan here, just a few hours south
Kansas 70.3 is an amazing race - I highly recommend it! If you get a chance, ride the course outside of Lawrence; my favorite bike course I've done by far. Plus they offer on-site camping which makes race morning simple (and cheap).

Some really good races have popped up in the KC area over the past few years - I'd recommend the KC Tri (May 22) or any races run by that group - good people.

Olathe resident here, south of Lenexa and OP.  Lots of great places to run and ride.  If you are interested in a really fun group check out KCMulitsport.com, lots of great people at all levels of triathlon, lots of fun social events and just a bunch of great people.

BTW, welcome to the Johnson county area and give a shout if you want to go for a ride or run.

ETA: I am planning on doing Kansas as well if you want a training partner.

Welcome to KC. Very active triathlon scene, no doubt. I live in Olathe. Plenty of swimming, biking and running places. When you are ready for specifics, just shout, we will point you where you would like to go.

just saw this and thot id chime in as well

im from Overland Park and absolutely love the area.

a lot of bikers in the area take metcalf and head south for as far as you want to go. i would normally start from a friends place off 159th street. on any given weekend you'll see loads of bikers and all generally friendly. however, keep aware of the drivers because, well, they're not quite as friendly always.

im part of kc multisport but due to college i havent been really involved in it, but will be changing that once i finish my master's in may

i'll also be training for the kansas 70.3

welcome to the area!

I'm up in the Dotte. Not a triathlete, yet, just recently ran my first half marathon. KC triathlon will probably be the first unless I do an indoor or find one sooner that is semi close. Then we'll see what happens from there. Not really a lot of activity where I live, I see the occasional cyclist when I am out on runs but typically no other runners. Joco is far better suited with the bike lanes and trail system. I don't even get sidewalks where I am. Makes you super aware of traffic!

I'm from JOCO as well and although I'm very new to the sport i think this area is great as far as proximity to lots of places to train, shop and race. Within an hour you have Lawrence/Clinton lake area, Topeka/lake shawnee area, hillsdale to the south and longview lake over in Missouri. Not to hijack the thread, but is anyone a part of or know anything about inthe group of bikers that ride around at about 6:00 in the 75th st and metcalf area? I've seen them around but never know how to go about hooking up with them for a ride.

I am on the MO side but work in OP.

I completed one sprint tri this year, a half mary and a 10K. I come from a recreational running background, swam competitively growing up, and the bike is a whole new world for me Let's just say getting on the roads terrifies me and I am actually loving the indoor trainer...

I also have my eye on KS 70.3 with my back-up plan being Redman later in the season.

We have lived here almost 11 years and I love it. Big city entertainment with smaller mid-west charm

Welcome!

I made it to KC and it's cold! I hope the snow melts soon. Do you know of any places to bike ride in the winter or does the snow have to be completely gone?  Thanks for your help!

Supposed to be in the 40's and 50's this weekend and next week. Most of the roads are cleared enough to ride so I'll be heading out on Sunday.

Where do you ride? Are there any bike paths cleared? Or just out on the road?

Just out on the road. I will probably head south from Olathe and head towards 199th street or west towards the Kill Creek park area. Give me a shout if you r interested in riding. My wife has a long run Sunday morning so I probably won't head out until late morning or early afternoon.

I pretty much grew up in Lawrence.  Its a great town and the 70.3 is an awesome race! Lawrence has one half marathon that I know of and a few more small races..But I hear KC is becoming really good about having some new races show up.  Also if your ever in Lawrence its a fairly bike friendly town.
