Subject: Aqua/Bike
Has anyone trained for an aqua/bike race with no running? I am looking at doing a couple of Olympic distance races this summer but I can not run due to lower back problems. There are 4 races close by that offer an aqua/bike race. It's 1500M swim and a 24.9mi bike. I can not find any aqua/bike specific training plans. My question is if I use a standard Olympic tri plan what should I do with the run training days? I've tossed around making them light weight lifting days, but I know that is frowned on during tri training. So any suggestions would be appreciated.

Since you won't be running, you could add more swimming and biking and have similar training load.

Are you better at swim or bike? which do you enjoy more? which do you think you could improve more on?

If the plan has 3 runs in it, you may want to add 1 to one sport and 2 to the other sport depending on the answers to the above.

I had another thought, look for a Oly plan that is bike or swim focused and then adapt that. Probably best to go with bike focused one because adding and having flow of the bike workouts might be more challenging for you to adapt on your own.

I have done two, well really one oly Aquabike and than did the swim/bike of an IM.  I just took the IM program and when it copied it to my schedule I omitted the run data.  I did do an occasional run but was really trying to rest my knee.  As it was the IM volume was enough that I didn't have a lot of extra time as it was.

I think this is a good idea assuming that they are not cutting swims instead of runs.

Also, if you want to do weight training do it.  Ignore all those who say it won't help you.  Unless your going at it and trying to bulk up it won't hurt you, and the strength training can help to keep you off the injured list (not with any guarantees of course).  Maybe focus on functional strength.  A lot of the BT plans already have strength training in them though so you wouldn't want to change each run to a weight lifting day.

Maybe incorporate core training exercises on the run days, unless they don't work with your low back issues.  Core strength will compliment both swimming and cycling.

I was injuried last season and I ended up doing 7 aquabikes last season. It is a different style of racing, since you do not run, you give it all on the bike, like a true time trial. More then once at a race, I finished and my legs seized up because how hard I went on the bike. What I did is replace the runs in my training schedule with bikes, BUT, what I did was use those extra bike sessions on the trainer, working on power. speed, techinque and drills. I also lift all year, when the season comes, I lower the weight amount or just use body weight baring exercises.

How does one find aqua/bike events?

I got into tris because everyone kept saying to me, "Hey, you can swim and bike, you should do triathlons." Well, adapting to running is proving very challanging. I'd love to do a race without running.

I'm in central Iowa, the Des Moines area.

Thank you everyone for the replies! I like the idea of core training, I could always use more of that. Extra bike training would be useful too. So it sounds like a mix of extra bike, core, and light weights would fill in the run days well.

I found the aqua/bike races looking for shorter tris in Indiana. Muncie has an Olympic tri every month from May to Sept and they include an Aqua/bike in them. So that fit in well with my current situation.
