Subject: RE: Washington D.C. Triathlon : Official Thread Be prepared for the heat! It can get very hot in D.C. in June. Take advantage of the resources available on the run course, including the ice water, the cold towels and the sports drink. I don't remember if they handed out carb gels. I think they did, but all I can remember is grabbing the cold, water-soaked towels and putting them on my head or shoulders. And dumping cups of ice into my cap and putting it on my head. So by far, the biggest challenge will be keeping cool, especially on the run. At least it's only Olympic distance. The swim course is very well marked, with very large orange buoys every 100 meters. Each buoy also indicates the distance swam, 100m, 200m, etc. It still helps to use Memorial Bridge to sight. The bike course isn't too bad. There are a few rolling hills but nothing too tough. Last year, we had to ride two loops of the course. There is a sprint race too. Even so, the total field is quite a bit smaller than the super-large Nation's Triathlon in the fall. I expect that the organizers will try to expand the field for WDC Tri this year, but that's just a guess. They manage to get over 4,000 people out there for Nation's. I don't see why they couldn't get a similar number for WDC. After you finish, I highly recommend the frozen pomegranate slushies offered in one of the tents at the finish area. Very welcome on a hot, muggy June day in Washington. Especially if you've just finished racing a triathlon. Edited by Potomac_2009 2011-01-26 1:08 PM
