Subject: So my dog ran away last week and...

The other day we had an exterminator over who left our back gate open.  I didn't pay attention, and 12 hours later I went to lock our two dogs up.  I noticed our female, Nyla, was missing.  I immediately went out and looked for her until 8 am, then finally gave up.  We kept searching, checking the pound every night but no luck.

During this time the male dog, Pepper, wouldn't eat and was just very mopey the whole time.  My wife was crying because she knew would probably never see Nyla again.

Fast forward to last night, eight days after 'the event'.  At about 4 am, Pepper jumped into my bed (a big no no), wimpered, and shoved his snout into my face.  I got up, went to do my business, and I heard something hitting the fence outside.  Since its been windy, I didn't pay much attention and went back to bed.

So this morning I get out of bed, go to see how Pepper is doing, and there's Nyla!  She's about 10 pounds lighter, but she seems okay.  She was able to push our fence open and sneak back in!

I'll post pics when I get home.

Question for the dog experts, if I take her on a run and let her lead the way, what are the chances of her taking me to her hiding place for the last 8 days?

That's awesome.  For you or anyone else reading this also remember to check the Vet offfices if you lose your pet.  Many of times I've seen lost pets turned into Vet offices.  Just curious did you have Tags on him?

My guess is either your dog wouldn't go to exact spot, but you never know.

My record for finding lost pet was about a year.   We had a python who escaped his tank and I found him a year later in the garrage.   I think he was hiding under the house in crawl space and either ran out of food or got hungry.

We lost our dog for a night and got a call next day that someone dropped him off at the ASPCA and luckily his chip still worked and had all our contact information.  I couldn't sleep that whole night he was gone and was out putting up flyers I made on computer all over the neighborhood.

Great ending....

Three years, 4 months and 11 days.  That's my family's record for a lost pet return.  Mom mom's cat Sam escaped one day from a rental house they were in while their new home was built.  The offered big rewards, spent night after night for weeks or months out looking for him.  All to no avail.  Eventually they got a new cat named Leo.  One Friday my mom was working from home and her phone rang.  The man on the line said Mrs. X, this is so and so from the micro chip company and we have someone one the line who has found your cat.  My mom was confused and said her cat was sitting on the desk next to her.  The man said "Your cat Sam?"  My mom nearly fell off her chair in shock.  He was found in the same general area (The Woodlands TX) and has come home to live with them again.  He was a bit skinnier and had some dietary issues adjusting back to cat food but otherwise just fine.  Sam and Leo are best buddies now.  3 years, 4 months and 11 days.  God only knows what he was up to for that time.

So awesome that Nyla found her way home.  A lot sooner than Sam.

Congrats on getting her back! she probably wont lead you to where she was, a good chance she ran off excited to be free, got lost and spent the 8 days wandering around lost, sleeping in different spots, till she found a smell she recognized and was able to follow it home.

Our records was 2.5 weeks for our cat when I was growing up, Amber. She was an 8 pound long furred greyish persian mix. Inside only cat who got scared by a stupid neighbor kid setting off firework and ran out the cat door for the other cats (never did it before) anyway she was gone and we looked for her but since there was a large area of undeveloped land less than a block away we did not think we would get her back (hawks, coyotes, and stray dogs). fast forward to 2.5 weeks later and I am out walking the dog when he starts to act strang and pull me towards some bushes. Found her under the bush with some recent injuries, lying next to a dead racoon. Took her (and the racoon) to our vet and the verdict was she had gotten into a fight with it and killed it - we still have no idea how as the thing weight 3 times more than her. luckily racoon tested negative for rabies and her wounds were fairly superficial though she always had a large bald patch on her shoulderblades from then on.

Awesome to hear she came back!/hijackLong story short, a friend took my husky and his dog to visit his family a few years back. Christmas day I get a phone from him that the night before a storm blew the gate open and the dogs got out. His dog came back. Mine didn't. After a couple of weeks, I thought he was lost for good. 5 LONG weeks later my friend got a call from his dad. His dad went home from work to find a dog under his carport. He weighed 41lbs at the vet, couldn't walk right for a few days and wouldn't let me out of his sight for about 3 days. Took about 10-14 days for him to recover physically. Be careful with exercise since shes lost weight. She probably needs time to recover.hijack/

Great ending!!!

My cat got out when my crackhead sister left the door open after my mother's death and wasnt seen for 30 days. Until my brothers dog started freaking out and clawing at the floorboards of the back deck. My cat had reappeared and was hiding under there. Crazy kitty. Our dog Spot once left for a night but was back the next day.

Come to think of it, we had a cat go missing for a couple days. They're hybrid indoor/outdoor cats and we normally wouldn't think much of it, but we figured he's gotta eat! We live next to this undeveloped area that has become overgrown with little trees mostly about 2 inches in diameter. I went out there calling for him and eventually heard some meowing. I followed the sound and learned that he had been staying "inside" a truck topper that had been abandoned just a few feet outside our property line! Crazy cat

Not gonna' happen.  Dog's don't lead.  You're the alpha (I hope), not them.    My guess is that she'll stick pretty close to you from now on.

glad Nyla came home.

She could take you there, but then she'd have to kill you.

I know, all she did before and after that, for most of her life, was her favorite thing, lying on my moms bed and chasing our other cats off of it if they tried to join her. She did live to a ripe old age of 17 too, not shabby for a shelter cat.

You never know... someone might have taken her in for a few days and it took her that long to escape from the adoptive family. Her loss of conditioning could have been stress induced.

That is totally awesome news. That she came home.

Irondog has gotten loose a couple times, but usually comes to the front door and waits for retrieval. She also got picked up by our neighbours once on the way to work... I think she was loose all of 5 minutes... she was still running around the block to get to the front door (she escaped through the back fence that time).

That's great that she's back.
Just in case you have not thought about it; if she's not fixed, you might watch for signs of pregnancy. You never know...
