Well I took the plunge and signed up for my first Olympic event (Pat Griskus in June) AND my first 1/2. Ironman (Timberman 70.3 in New Hampshire August 21). Anyone here care to share their first time experience of either of these events? I have a lot of getting ready to do, but I think I can survive it. I appreciate any advice.

this will be my 4 year doing it.  in my view the PG oly is the best triathlon in Connecticut.  super well run, great but hard course.  great volunteers, tons of race support.  tons of beer and food after.  excellent charity race.  just be ready to suffer a bit.  the bike course is super hilly and the run is a double loop 1.5 mile down hill 1.5 miles up hill to the turn around and finish.  it is not a "fast flat course".  last year was the first time anyone broke 2 hrs.  We'll do a pre ride at some point so stay tuned!

Thanks jsklarz - looking forward to it.  When you plan a ride, let me know, I would be interested in a practice run before the event.

I did Timberman a few years ago, when I was living in NH. A few tips:

Book hotel reservations close-by very early!

A majority of the bike is gradual elevation changes, with hills at the end, unless the route has changed. Very fast, flat riding on the shoulder of a main road.

Run is slow, rolling hills - nothing crazy; I remember it being VERY hot that day, so hydrating was key. In previous years, when I've volunteered, it has been pouring, so come prepared with a light cycling jacket to stave off the chill.

Great post-race party. The lake is SUPER clean and lovely.

It is worth it to arrive a day ahead for packet pickup and the mini "festival" that they have, and to sit in on the pro panel - kind of fun to meet and greet them.

Thanks for the heads up lobstergirl, I did look into lodging and found that most of the close rooms are booked alread so I'm in Tilton at the Rodeway Inn (about 16 miles away) going up Saturday and staying over till monday incase I'm too banged up to drive back after the race, plus it looks like a good time post race.  Thanks again.  Todd

fyi - arrive as early as your body will permit you morning of the race. parking is typically a big issue. there is really only one way in and out of the park, so traffic backs up.
