vabeachnut1 - 2011-08-13 6:52 AM I try not to be overly concerned about things I cannot control, like the weather. Besides, 10 day forecasts are pretty useless. Personally, if it rains, so be it. It will just add to the challenge. I have done a local tri here in Norfolk during a tropical storm a few years back. I would prefer that to a 105 heat index.

Went through this routine when I flew out for the Boston Marathon this spring...forecast was looking like rain for race day 10 days out, but it ended up being windy and dry for the marathon and raining the day after.

OTOH, it's stupid to ignore forecasts when you're getting ready to pack for a cross country flight and a six-day stay in New England, with a HIM in the middle of it.  Just sayin'...

gatjr33 that is very helpful information. Just realized that we are staying in Concord. My husband booked it on points and I thought it was closer than it is.

Concord is an okay place to stay. The ride to the race will be fine with little traffic. Like I mentioned previously, all will go well until you see the brake lights. Then you pretty much just take a deep breath and wait. No worries, it will all go fine. Good luck with the race.

Any advice for the spectators?? Can they enjoy part of the beach during the bike and run? Is the best bet for them to park at Gunstock and shuttle back and forth? Can they get there at 7 or 8 and still get in or do they have to be there at 4 or 5?

If I was spectating, I would park at Gunstock and take the shuttle down. The race starts at 7, so if you want to see the start, you should make it to the park by 6:45. The race is pretty spectator friendly. You can watch the swim portion and then watch riders take off on their bikes. You can then enjoy the beach during a portion of the bike and still catch some folks coming in on the bike and going out on the run. The run is a two loop route, so there are several places on the run route where you can see all kinds of action. It is not a big park so getting around from point to point is quick and easy, even during the race. You can get dropped off and walk into the park at any point in time. You will not likely get a vehicle into the park after 5:30 or so.

I was thinking of covering my bike over night the night before the race in case it starts to rain.  What do people use to do this since you can't use the full bike covers?

I mostly just worry about protecting the elbow rests and the saddle (esp. if it may just be raining overnight...sucks to have them be wet for the race when it isn't actually raining during the race)...I use plastic bags (usually just whatever ziplocs I have around) and rubber bands.

Most recent forecast for Sunday shows partly cloudy, 79 degree high, 20% chance of rain. That would be nice if it holds, although much can change over the next 6 days.

Final days of taper. Feels good to have gotten all the training out of the way. The way I see it, the last day of training is the true finish line. The race itself is just a celebration of that victory.

I mostly care about the saddle. I use an old swim cap from a prior race and cover the seat. Works well and is easy to spot when heading to T1. The brighter the better!

Not quite ready for Timberman this weekend?  Try the Pumpkinman next month.  Looking to sell/trade some bibs.  PM me if interested.  Good luck to all athletes and be safe!

I don't get the covering up the bike thing over night. Are you not wet after the 1.2 mile swim?

Don't know about you , but I airdry a lot faster than a soaked elbow rest or saddle (as do my tri shorts, for that matter).

A question for the locals:  Is the challenging climb around mile 9-10 of the bike course the same as the "Mt. Washington" I see video of on YouTube?

When I rode the course it was mile 10.3 to 11 that was the hardest, a 1st gear climb, but it's not impossible.

Ah, this climb is no mt. washington. It is a challenging climb but more than managable. It is likely less than a 10% grade and no longer than 1 mile. I am taking a swag here. I am saying this and I am a bigger guy that does not climb well. I run a 12-25 during the race and climb the hill pretty well. Further, it is the only real climb that I remember on the entire course. No worries.

Sure, but you will dry off quickly. Your aero pads and handlebars might not. It is kind of important for some to minimize the wetness and thus the slipping while handling the bike over the first few miles. I have raced several times without covering my bike and things went fine. It is a preference.

All packed and set to head out tomorrow afternoon to fly to Manchester...we get in at 12:55am Friday.  Motel at the Manchester airport tomorrow night, then move to a hotel in Tilton for the rest of the weekend.  Planning to be at the Friday dinner, assuming the thing doesn't fill up or something.

Nice opportunity to meet Chrissie at the dinner last night (told her not to scold me if I look at my watch at the finish line tomorrow).

Driving the course this morning, then picking up our bikes and riding a bit this afternoon.

Goal for both my wife and me tomorrow:  Finish before the potential severe t'storms in the afternoon!

Good luck, all!

I enjoyed every minute of my day yesterday!! PR by 53 minutes over my time from last years race! I didn't even realize it was Chrissie Wellington putting my medal around my neck until I heard her say good job. I looked up finally and said "Thank you Thank you!!!" It got a little hot on the run but it was manageable. There were two sections I can think of on the bike with some pretty rough road. Bottles were ejected all over because of it around mile 14 or 15 maybe?? They were going to be shortening the course around 2:15 or so for those that were still out there due to the severe weather that was coming in. I wonder how they account for that in those athletes' finishing times and age group standings?
