So I am trying to plan my triathlon calender for the year and there is one of those new 5150 races near me that I would like to do but it is 2 weeks prior to my first HIM.  Is that a bad idea.  I have a feeling that if I have to ask I already know the answer to my question.

If you don't try to kill the olympic, and it sort of fits in with your plan (assuming you're following one), then why not?  Good race practice.  Just make sure that you've got lots of base for your HIM from your other training.  By a couple weeks out, most plans I've seen seem to be dialing back the distances anyway.

Just take it easy and enjoy the race.  It will be fine as long as you don't push it too hard.

Most books I have read say either have your A races within 2 weeks, or at least separated by 6 weeks.  2 weeks is actually ideal to have 2 A races - you can maintain your peak condition, and 2 weeks is plenty of time to recover from your Olympic - about 4 or so days after your Olympic you can get a key workout or 2 in - then taper the week up to the HIM.  No reason to hold back on either.

Personally I'd kill the Oly as best I could and then continue to train/taper for the HIM.  I don't sign up for races as "take it easy practice".  That's just my opinion based on experience.
