Took the bike to my shop for a tune up and was told my rear wheel is toast.  Bought the bike 4 years ago, so I suppose it's about time...but I did not know that an equivalent wheel is going to cost $150.  I paid 750 for the whole bike!  I don't want to downgrade though...anyone know a good place to find good deals on a wheel?  I know ebay...but other thoughts?

Craigslist usually has a wheel or wheelset on sale that would match a $750 bike well.

I got the bike at a steal for 750.  It's a specialized allez elite, with 105 shifters, ultegra drive train(i think, might have the combination backwards), came with pedals too.  At least I've been told it was a steal.I've never done much bike shopping.

I 2nd the Neuvation wheels.  I like a lot.  I've also heard that these are very good for the price (rear wheel $100)

I'd be questioning why the LBS thinks it's toast.  What happened to it?  Other than a cracked rim or something, everything else is fixable for fairly cheap.  Spokes can be replaced, bearings can be re-packed etc.

Can you give any more details about the kind of wheel it is? If you're talking a basic road wheel (Shimano R550 or equivalent) then yes, you're probably getting ripped off.

Give Google shopping a try for the wheels you're looking for. There are lots of resources out there with discounted bike parts...good luck!

Check the slowtwitch.com classifieds, there are some pretty good sets of all levels for sale.

Try checking Bonktown - I just saw a pair of Easton's for 200, and they also had some Shimano's and Mavic's for pretty cheap.  They have a vista sidebar app that makes it pretty easy.

Funny you mention the wh - r550 . I have a set that have lasted very well, nice rim shape, low count blade spokes, respectable weight for the price. Can be had off the auction sites for around 150 set new.

Another vote for the Shimanos.   A great value.

I don't think they're trying to rip me off.  He told me that it'll manage for now, but that it will slowly die. He said when he spun it he heard some kind of grinding from inside the hub.  He told me they had a similar wheel but wasn't trying to push me into buying from him, or buying a new one any time soon.

It's an ALX295 wheel.  I believe it's a 24 spoke count, with bladed spokes. 700c size.  I don't know much about parts, does that sum it up?

It's an Alex wheel, so the hub probably is a throwaway which is not serviceable.  I would suggest the shimano RS10's as a good replacement set that you can get cheaply (probably less than $200 for the wheelset if you buy a take-off set).  I do not have the link, but bikeradar.com gave them a great review, and the hubs are quality.

These are 'decent' wheels, but if you plan on using a wheel cover-they usually won't fit shimano hubs.

I've got a Mavic CXP 21 with a cassette and a trainer tire in the classified for $120 shipped. Without the tire I'd let it go for $90, shipped. That's with cassette, skewer and rim tape.

If you are looking for a solid, inexpensive wheel this is a good way to go. I needed to replay my rear wheel a couple of years ago on an entry level bike & I went w/ Neuvations. They have been a perfect fit for my needs.

I bought a set of Titan wheels last year. Happy w/ them after one season.
