Subject: Advice on my planned "plan" : A race is an HIM
Hi everyone! I need some advice please. I have been training very consistently all winter long. For the bike, I have been following Jorge's winter cycling plan. I am currently on week 7 of his plan. It's pretty rigorous and I have had some great improvement on the bike! In addition, I swim 2x's a week and run 3 x's a week, and strength train 1-2 x's a week.
This will be the start of my 4th season of triathlon. My A race is July 9th, Muncie IM 70.3- which is 23.5 weeks away. This will be my second HIM. My question is- do stop the cycling part of Jorge's plan and stick strictly with my training plan which starts on 1/31/11 and starts with a much-lesser volume than what I've been doing? (Of note, I am reading Joel Friel's new book Your Best Triathlon and am using his teachings in my season this year).  Thanks!!

I would not do that unless you need to cut back on the bike in order to meet the rest of the plan (e.g., if you need to fit in more swimming or running and couldn't manage that with your current bike schedule).  If your body is able to handle more, then you should do more if your goal is to improve.

My goal is definitely to improve.. In fact, one of my measurable goals is to improve my FTP by 5 watts/month during my base periods. However, after doing 2 tests so far, I may not survive that far ahead! LOL!

Great goal!  I am currently trying to "recapture" about 15 watts or so over the next 2 months.  They were definitely easier to lose.

I'm sort of struggling with the same thing.  I run 3-5 marathons a year and will be doing an HIM this summer.  My HIM plan has me starting out with no more than 3.5 hours of running for the first 8 weeks.  I'm usually doing 5-7 hours a week or running now.  Obviously I'll have to cut back some to fit in other workouts, but I plan on keeping my running mileage/time up as much as I can w/o having the other training sessions suffer.  I think we both will just have to find the right balance.  Good luck!

Sous- thanks and good luck to you too!
I definitely want to continue making improvements.. but I don't want to enter the dreaded overtrained state either..
