Subject: Shoe Recommendations (wide feet)
After reading a few threads and a lot of reviews of shoes, I still have no idea what kind of shoe I should get.
I am currently wearing a pair of NB 992's (size 9, 4E. I know short fat foot) with NB Sport insoles that i've had for way too long, and really need something new. I know that good shoes are an investment, and i hope to put in a lot of miles this year, so what are some of your rec's?

Stick with NB? Brooks? Aisics? Or do i just need to go to a running shop and get fitted?

TIA

I have slightly wider feet (I don't know exactly how wide, I don't remember). I find that Sauconys just don't fit me well at all. I have generally stuck with Mizunos or Nikes for a long time, but I'm currently wearing Adidas. I wore NB, but found them too clunky after a while.

Actual models I like, the best I have found for me was the Wave Rider.

I strongly suggest going to a running store and getting properly fit.

In my personal experience, I have found Asics to run farily narrow.  I like Nike.

I have a very V shapped foot, though - wide at the toes, very narrow at the heel.

I wore adidas a lot through highschool and early college, but always had problems turning my ankles just walking on flat ground. I'm pretty athletic, so I dont think it's goofyness or being clumsy, it was just like i was walking around on ice skates.

I finally switched to NB and rarely if ever have that problem anymore. I agree they can be a little clunky, but so are my fat feet, so thats what i have to work with.

Thats pretty much what my feet are like, so i might keep Nike as an option once i get fitted.

Thanks!

Outside of perhaps being worn out, is there something about your current shoes you don't like? I've never seen a need to switch shoes "just because". IOW, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. That being said the 992 has been replaced by the 993 which could possibly fit slightly different. Also be aware that not all models of shoes are available in wide widths, so your selection will likely be smaller. Many retailers only stock a small number of wide shoes, so you may have to buy online.

FWIW, I've been wearing Nike Pegasus for the past 8-9 years and have gone though at least a half dozen model changes. Some good, others not so good. Because I rotate the shoes I wear, I'll occasionally try something different. To date I haven't found a shoe I like better though and often the other choices get quickly relegated to walking or yard shoes.

I suffer with you...

Wore Asics Gel Kayano for several years.  Great shoe that comes in a 4E.  I wear Brooks Adrenaline (4E) often for longer runs and NB 905 (2E) when on the track or doing intervals.  NB 905 is the lightest wide trainer type shoe I've come across and find myself wearing it almost exclusively nowadays.

Absolutely go to the running store with an open mind.  You never know what gem they might pull out for you.  Why not?

runningwarehouse.com has a section on their webstore devoted just to shoes that come in wide widths. Those shoes are divided by support (neutral, stability, control, etc.) They've also got a feature where you plug in your current shoe and size, and they will tell you what size you need in the shoe you're looking at. good way to get an idea of what's out there and how much it might cost. Plus they do 2nd day shipping free, and free return shipping.

Gibby -

I think you should go to your LRS and get fitted.  While it is possible to identify shoes similar to your 992s on the internet, you won't know how they fit your feet (whether they pinch your toes, etc) until you try them on.

However, having said that, it looks like your 992s are a light stability shoe which means that in Brooks to find a comparable shoe, you'd want to wear a Guidance or Support shoe (not a control shoe).  So, with a 4E, your options are the Trance (light support) and the Adrenaline (regular support).

But again, I think it is worth the time and effort to go and get fitted at your local store to see what shoes are out there in your size and what works best for you.

I was going to say go with a mens shoe, but being that you are a man, you probably got that covered!

My feet are wide, not extremely, so I wear men's shoes and have a lot of luck with that. I currently wear a Brooks Launch.
