Negative HOLY F*** THAT'S COLD!

Actually, the water temp hasn't bothered me the past two years.  I did Racine a few years back when it was 56 and I did one this year (in Budapest) where the water temp was 58.

So Galena is nothing.

But RIGHT NOW.  It is also probably ROCK hard.

I am doing Racine this year and have heard the same thing about the cool water temps of Lake Michigan.  Also heard the water was crystal clear.

If any of the gals are interested out there, my company in coordination with Fever River Outfitters (a local vendor in Galena) offers an annual Galena Tri Camp for intermediate women.  We cover a lot of in an outs of triathlon in general, the actual race and we ride the course, run and have fun.  It is great for beginner hill cyclists as this is quite a hilly course for first timers.

Hey y'all I'm looking for lodging for the Galena Tri. It looks like all the rooms in Galena (which seems like a very small town) are booked. Any suggestions on where I should stay? I see Dubuque but it seems that's about 15 miles away. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you also check out Eagle Ridge?  I just got my room about a week ago from there.

Otherwise, Dubuque is probably your best bet.

I'm coming back from Virginia to do this race.  No particular reason except for I'm originally from Dubuque and it coordianted nicely with a trip to visit family.

I'm staying with family in Asbury, which is on the West side of Dubuque.  Even worst-case scenario, you are 20 minutes from the race course if you stay in Dubuque.

That being said, Galena is definitely known for its bed-n-breakfasts, if you are into that sort of thing.

As for the water temp - any postings of water temp from previous years?  I did a race last year in 62 degree water and survived, but not sure if I'm up for anything below 60 degrees in my sleeveless wetsuit.  EEKK!!

Per the website, they will start to update the water temp on May 1st.  And I think I know why.  If they did it now, 1/2 the people would probably pull out because of it.  Even though it will start to move up fairly quickly.

I've done it 2 years in a row.  I think last year was slightly warmer than the year before.  both were in the 60's.  Trust me, you can do it in the 50's.  I've done down to 55.  Just get into the water and get acclimated.  once you do, you are good to go.

Still waiting for the first water temp update on the site.

I'm wondering if they are waiting for the ice to break?  Laughing

I think it was right at 60 last year, wasn't it?

*Quickly checks log*

Actually it was at 63 last year.  Hopefully we will have some warm ones soon.  Then again, I seem to remember it being pretty close to that at this time last year.

Keep your fingers crossed.

And it is only 600m.  Just look at it as an opportunity to set a swim PR.  LaughingCool

Edit to add: a week out from the race last year and the water temp was only 53 so it gained a lot in the last 7 days.

It is now up to 60, according to the website.  And the forecast shows 73 and some showers.  That's racing weather.

That sucked. Accuweather is showing T-Storms @ 6, 8 , 10 in the morning.

My guess = Duathlon. Hope the rain goes around Galena.

I'm a newbie only doing the duathlon.  With the rain how slippery will the downhill biking be with the rain?  Little anxious about this.  thanks.

everybody survive the bike/rain? I was riding the brakes on the last two descents into the resort....it was starting to get slick.

I'm glad the rain held off for most of the starters to get underway....
