Long story short, sent my teen son out for a run.  Thinking he may blow it off,  made him wear my Garmin. 3.67 miles in 26  minutes.

He's an athlete, but not a runner.

Is there a way to cheat a Garmin?  Or do I need to retract my whole speech on keeping in cardio shape when you  have to miss sport practices??

And if you can cheat it......how?   I may need this info, hypothetically....... Wink

HA!!   Run.....would have been too slow for the car, and his bike didn't leave the garage!

Yeah if I were gonna "cheat" a Garmin I'd give it to someone else and pay them to run with it, or drive around in the car with it.

He didn't have time to call a friend, I had the car keys, and he didn't take his bike.

Any more takers???  Cool

26 minutes is WAY more than enough time to call or flag someone down and drive 3 miles.

Maybe he tied it to a string and whirled it around for a bit in a big circle.

Tied it to a model rocket.

Put it on the dog and played fetch.

Did nothing and it showed your last run.

Sent Chuck Norris an e-mail betting him he couldn't use his mind power to bend time and space.

Hypnotized you into THINKING he did it.

Possibilites are truly endless, but remember Occam's Razor....

Which Garmin model? Can you download the run into your computer and view it on google maps?
If 3 miles of the run were on Highway 85 then you'll have reason to be suspicious....

I did download it......it was the neighborhood loop.   If it was in a car, that's hella slower than he or any of his friends drive!

No Garmin cheats to report???

For a teen who's athletic 26 min. for 3.67 mi is doable. That's just over 7 min. miles. Why is that not possible?

Just curious, why would one force a teenager to run if that's not what he's into?

Does anyone else find it ironic that "velcromom" is making her kid wear a Garmin to track his activities?

I find it fitting. Ironic would be if her name was "FreeSpiritMom". Or maybe that would just be hypocritical.

Does the data look like a run?  Is the pace steady and consistent with the elevation profile?  I would guess that it is possible to hack a data file into the Garmin but it would be way harder to hack it and make it look real than to just run it if you are 17.

Tell him good run and that if he can still do it when he's 60 then he's done himself a huge favor.

I don't think the kid cheated.  3.7 miles in 26 minutes for an active kid.  He probably just wated to get it over with.  Look at the mile splits.  If they are close to even no reason to doubt that he did it.

I know that I've had odd results if I start running before it locks onto the sats.  I'll look down and 10 mins into the run it'll say 2.5 miles.

That sounds about right to me, if he's into sports.  My son is 15, and occasionally enters 5K's with zero run-specific training.  He plays football, baseball, and swims.  He's not a runner specifically.  He typically turns in a time around 22 minutes.  That translates into roughly 26 minutes for 3.67 miles.

Your son didn't cheat.  He's just a teenager, not old and slow like many of us here.

Making me laugh!

He's a water polo player.  He missed several practices due to school activities, and his deal with his coach was that he'd get a couple of runs in on the days he missed.  He did a couple of these 20-30 minuters, but didn't know how far he'd gone.  I was trying to make the point that he'd lose cardio fitness quickly if he didn't do something on the off days.  So, to prove my point, I suggested he wear the Garmin.   I figured he was going 2 miles or so.  He whipped that run out without even breathing hard, so my point was completely lost.  Ah well - another lesson in 'mom doesn't know everything'.

(He did run a race a couple of years ago - a half mary - with no run training to speak of.  1:47.  I really shouldn't be surprised.)

If you don't have heart rate info, how hard is it to cheat, really?

Get in car, drive route, don't hit stop until a reasonable time is displayed. I wouldn't be much out of breath after that, either. He could also have taken his skateboard.

To quote him, Hella Faster.  So, yeah, proud and just a bit annoyed.

....and part of his 'route' is a trail.  doesn't have a skateboard, his bike and his car didn't leave.  I have to concede this one to the kid.
