With all of the Egyptian turmoil in the news, made me think of places I want to travel before I die.  Below is the beginning of my bucket list of travel places.  What are some of yours??

Irish Countryside
Wales
Arthurian England
Venice - Italy
Rome
Alexandria - Egypt
Istanbul (Constantinople) Turkey
New Mexico - USA
Maine - USA

Well, aside from the visit every place on the planet, my short term list:

Madagascar - before the lemurs are gone
Rwanda/Uganda - to see the gorillas
Mongolia

And of course the rest of the planet, no place too far or too obscure for my wanderlust -- though the crossing to Antarctica scares the bejeezus outta me

I have similar discussions with my GF and w/ folks at work occasionally. They all think I'm nuts, but I'm heartened to see that I'm not the only one with some slightly-atypical destinations in mind. I'd like to see a couple of civilized places also, but it's some of the out-of-the-way places that seem really interesting:

Prague
Djibouti
Istanbul (not Constantinople?)
Namibia (the Kalahari and the Great Karoo)
Tibet
The Atacama Desert in Chili
A couple of the cities in Russia
The Crimean Peninsula
Algiers (yes, I'd like to Rock the Kasbah, I just don't want to get arrested for it)

I'd love to get back to (if only for a day or two)
Bonaire (and maybe Curaçao)
Marrakech
Germany (where my father was born)

Given time I could think of many other places.

Definately add Greece

I read somewhere that the new part is called Istanbul and the old part is still called Constantinople.  When I was a kid I fell in love with the name Constantinople so have wanted to go since I was 10.

It was.  Just the old part is still called Constantinople by the natives and that's the part I would want to see most.

I love to drive fast so at the top of my list is to drive the Nurburgring in Germany.

After that:
Swiss Alps
Prague
Oktoberfest in Munich

Crossed Rome off the list several years ago and that was the most amazing place I've ever been to.

I'd have to think for a few minutes to come up with a list of my own, but I'm surprised that no one has included any spots in the US. Have you all already been to Yosemite? That's my all-time favorite place to be.

Too many Americans    Innocent  (except Florida, where there are too many Canadians).

I have to say I'd like to drive Monument Valley in Utah/Arizona. Maybe the badlands of the Dakotas too. I've driven through Detroit, but I think it's a different type of badlands.

What I'd like to know from those of you who posted offbeat places is ... why? (or heck, even usual places)? I mean, I think it's awesome you want to visit coastal Somalia, for example, but ... what's it attracting you there?

I'd still like to hit South America because it's the one continent/region I haven't been to. That's a whole world. I hardly know what to pick!

I'm thinking Uruguay because there are some gorgeous beach places there (very much a beach person), I get along better in Spanish than Portuguese, and they have two really cool iron-distance races there .

Besides, nobody ever goes to Uruguay, but they do have a helluva soccer team.

None. I've been to all the places I've really wanted to go to and quite a few that I didn't really care to be.

The only reason I'd travel at all now is to go to a destination tri.

Morocco, Greece, Spain, and Thailand (Bangkok again and Pattiya)

All for the amazing food and beaches.

Very little interest in "standard" trips like Disneyworld, Paris, kissing the Blarney stone, etc etc.

But I really just like seeing and learning about lots of stuff.  Almost did a study abroad session in Petrograd just because I could.  Not about to turn down a vacation and experience.  Except for maybe Disneyworld.  Gosh, I just don't get it.

Chinguetti, Mauritania
Was once an even greater city than Timbuctoo; during Berber kingdoms it was one the great centers of scholarship and spirituality in the world and it's libraries were second to none. Still supposed to be a great destination for historical travelers. And I would like to see a great desert, see such a unique culture. All that stuff!

Ethiopia- I suspect you know it was the only African Kingdom not colonized by Europeans and thus is a "purer" historical experience, the cultural piece would be amazing.

Coastal Somalia (seems unlikely at this point)
One of the most spectacular coastlines anywhere...

Yippee

actually yes i was hoping you would explain how exciting and what a beautiful pic ... i think it would be wonderful to travel down the east African coast ... but the pirates ... hmph!

I would love to go to Ethiopia too. (Although I do suspect there may have been an Italian or two there, once). I have this THING for Ethiopian food. And I would love to trek in the vast stunning highlands, and I hope to spot the Ethiopian wolf. Visit archaeological sites in the Awash.
