Subject: how to keep a swim cap on?

The swimming is becoming an exercise in frustration...not because of the distance but because I can't seen to keep the swim cap from slowly coming off during a long swim.  Does anyone have any ideas other than a swim cap with a chin strap?  There has got to be some way to worry more about the swimming and less about keeping my equipment on.

thanks!

This has got to be a fit or material problem.  Maybe a slightly smaller cap or a different material?  What is the cap you have now made of?  Some material is slipperier than others and has a lower spandex percentage.

nope, several manufacturers make a junior size. and the sizing varies from brand to brand by a small bit. for me it helps to get wet and try to get as much air out of the cap as possible before any really long swimming. for races that provide caps, they are usually latex, and don't slip as much as the silicone. also the way you have your goggles positioned can help hold the cap in place.

Mine kept coming off last time, silicone, like yours. My first thought was it may be due to the product in my hair.

Try turning your head upside down underwater and squishing the air out of the top of your cap out with both hands.  That release of air/bubbles will suction it much better to your head.  I have to do that a few times per practice but it definitely works temporarily.

Too much hair product will do it too.  And some caps just suck.  It helps to find a brand that you like and then stick with it.  I got one from a race that literally shot off my head like a rubber band within 10 seconds of starting my swim!

Is it really that much of an issue?

You obviously have to have your cap on at the start of a race, but can you get a DQ or penalty for losing it during? If not, I wouldn't sweat it.

How old is your cap. The silicone caps tend to stretch with use. I found I need to purchase a new one every six to nine months.

if the OP is a woman with more hair than a pixie cut (or a man with long hair,) it definitely is an issue.  hair in the eyes, mouth, nose, wrapped around your head - awful.

I swim with my goggle straps over my cap in practice and have never had a problem with cap moving around. But, it has been conventional wisdom to wear your cap over your goggle straps in a race because if you get kicked in the face you are less likely to loss your goggles. Last two races, my cap lasted about 300 yards before popping off. And my hair is very short. For my next race, I'm thinking about using a band from an old pair of goggles to wear over my cap to keep it on.

Part of the reason silicone caps are comfortable is the same reason that they slide off. Go latex and the problem is usually solved.

I have the same problem with most caps.  I went to the nylon/spandex cap and I don't have that problem with it.  I also like that I can feel the waterline on my head so I know if my positioning in the water is right.
