XTERRA SoCal Trail Run Series

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 16m 22s
Overall Rank = 24/329
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 3/29
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:40. Hit Starbucks on the way to the start. Coffee, banana, Clif Bar & Balance Bar. Plenty of parking when we arrived at 6:45. Picked up our packets and used the facilities. The "expo" area was starting to fill up around 7:00 and the line got long. It was chilly in the morning and we were bundled up when not sitting in the truck with the heat on.
Event warmup:

About 10 minutes easy (~8:30 miles) on the first stretch of the course. Was able to warm up enough to strip down to shorts and a t-shirt. Carried a Powerade Zero / Carbo-Pro mix in my handheld. Milled around at the start, chatting with PB and Monica.

Comments:

Started off in the mist, but it burned off quickly. Either that, or we got up above the marine layer in the first mile.

I had run this race before, so I knew what to expect. There are some sections that, for me, are not runnable. The first is during the first climb mile 2-3. It is a long climb and gets very steep. I mixed in some walking there and then again on the staircase around mile 5.

I never really felt like I was racing until the end when I was just hanging on and trying to finish. It was a tough run.
What would you do differently?:

I think I paced the race okay. I definitely didn't go out too hard. I was trying to save something for the staircase and climb from mile 4.5 to the top of South Fortuna (around mile 6).
Post race
Warm down:

Went to the car and changed shirt and put on sandals. Grabbed camera and went back to get some finishing vids of PB and Mon.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was planning on training through this race, so I did the TCSD club ride the day before. Not sure if it mattered since my legs felt okay, but I guess 40 miles on the bike didn't help.

Event comments:

This is a good race. The first and only other time I did it was in 2008 and it was pouring down rain, the trails were slick and muddy and there wasn't much support out on the course. This time, the weather was very nice, they provided a course talk before the start and there was plenty of support. I carried a bottle and never took aid from the stations.
