What is the distance? Unless youre doing an IM I wouldn't reccommend using seperate swimming, running and cycling shorts.

For training/biking that looks fine. not sure where you are at geographically but you might consider a rain jacket for biking/running and also for biking maybe a bike jersey or two. you might also want a pair of gloves. When you get close to your actual race you might consider getting and training in some form of tri-suit/tri top and tri shorts also.

I have a couple of sprints and couple olympic races I have my sites set on.  I would love to do an iron distance but will have to see as I get closer if I think I have the training that I need to actually do it.  Well right now with the chance of another 6-10 inches of snow I probably will need an indoor trainer too.  I was thinking that as i get closer to race time I would pick up some of the more race specific items.  This will give me more time to figure different things what I need, and what I can do without.  It will also allow me to camoflauge some of the money I will be spending from my wife.  She thinks I am crazy doing this, but I'll give her props she is letting me spend alot of money without giving me too much grief.

For training...the only thing I would add is a pair of cheap sunglasses.  You'd be surprised what hits your face when you're riding.  Dust, bugs, rocks that get kicked up, etc.

I've got a couple sets of these, they're $12 for 6 pair and they're actually safety glasses:

Swim "trunks".  What are 'trunks'?  Are those like those baggy jammers?

Some Optional items:
cap or visor for running.  Handy if sunny.  Keep hair down too.
race belt (where you attach your race number)
foodstuffs (gels, energy bars, etc)
triathlon bumper sticker or oval for you car
Wetsuit (depending on H2O temp)
Tri shorts/ tri top or tri-suit.  saves changing time. +Awful to swim then run in cycling shorts.
bike gloves (many don't wear them for races- but I do)
Backpack/duffle for all the stuff to bring it to the transition area.
Helium balloon- to mark your bike in a crowded trans area. (I use pink streamers)
Bungie style shoe laces for your sneakers.  Big time saver!
Towel.  Bring it to transition to wipe off your feet and dry off a little.

Add in pool fees and entry fees for races.

Hiding money spent is a bad plan, btdt with dh. Do you guys have a budget? We each get a set amount per month for "extras." The running joke in our house is, "Use your spending money." Unsolicited answer, I know. But just agreeing on purchases ahead of time and setting budgets has eliminated a lot of disagreements for us.

Heck, I always thought you had to earn one of those before putting it on your car.  Do they hand out purple hearts now for considering joining the military

I think he's referring more to training, in that case different shorts would be good to have. Racing though it would depend on the distance.

Depending on your budget try to find stuff on clearance at your LBS, you can usually find jerseys half price, water bottles and cages for next to nothing. Use Amazon.com and other online resources to find stuff around half off, be careful though that you look at sizing charts for clothes and know very well that bike equipment will fit your bike before you buy. Once you do buy try things out immediately after they arrive so that you don't miss the period to return them in and get stuck with them.
