I know I need to be eating better and training but I just can't seem to get it together. In my defense, I am working 9 hours then going to work in the evening 2-3 hours for a job that requires a lot of walking. By the time I get home in the evening, when I would normally ride or run, my legs are jello and I am too tired to go out and train. Mornings, when I would normally go swim, I hit the snooze bar 3-4 times until I HAVE to get up for work.

I think I need to sign up for a TRI so I have something to work for. I wrote IM on my hand to remind me that next year I want to do a 1/2 Iron followed by an IM in 2007. Hopefully I will look at this and not eat that things of fries.

Anyone else need a kickstart?

I am totally goal oriented and I won't exercise without a project to aim for. I sat on my expanding 35 year old butt for the last year because I stopped signing up for cycling events. 6 months ago I signed up for my first tri and it totally jumpstarted my system, again. I figured out how to prioritize (I don't have a walking job), I started a log here to help keep me honest, and knowing that I have events that I have PAID for and need to succeed at really keeps me going. Plus, I feel super cool having things to talk about on BT.com :-). Start a log here and find out what time of day (lunch?) you can fit a workout in. However, I don't see how you can do a 1/2IM if you are working 2 jobs for a total of 12 hours a day!!! Sprint, yes, Oly, maybe, but HIM???? I wish you luck!!!!!

Luckily (but the money is nice) the 2nd job job will end as soon as it starts getting cold which means the winter until next July will be just one job, the 9 hour one. Maybe I'm not being realistic with starting a training regimen under such time constraints, it is just frustrating. I have the whole week without the wife and boy at home and all I could think about last night as I tried to get my mind to go jogging was how tired and weak I felt.

I'm gonna sign up for the same Oympic I did last year which is in 1 1/2 months away and just do the best I can with what little time I have.

You can still train, just maybe not HIM train....Do you have a lunch hour at your day job? Are you in a position to go for runs and rides at that time? Then, maybe you can fit swims in over the weekend. I, after many years, finally learned how to tell my employers "I am going for a run right now, I will get that for you later this eveing" etc...But I , again, don't have two jobs and I have that option.

I'd sure hate to see you dispair. How can anyone with the lime helmet cat for an avatar dispair??? It will just take some serious scheduling on your part.

KICK!

I think we need another workout challenge! I challenge you to get in at least three workouts between now and Noon on Sunday. Think you can do that? That's just 3... not one a day, one every other day. And I'll only ask that you put in 20 minutes for each workout. How's that for a total softball?

What do you have to say to that?

(1) Use the 5 minute rule - when you are trying to get started again it can be REALLY tough.  Just go for 5 minutes - if it feels like crap, then you can go home.  Anyone can do it for 5 minutes - right?  I'll bet you that just getting out the door is your hardest part, and once you've gone for 5 minutes, you'll be ok to do the workout.  Doing it for 5 minutes will tell you if you really are too tired, or if you were just being lazy.

(2) sign up for something - best motivation there is.

(3) Here's a plan for an Oly in 6 weeks (to finish, NOT be competitive) - from Training for Multisport Athletes.
Rest 1 day
Swim two days - work up to swimming the swim distance
Run 30 minutes once a week (include some accelerations/fartleks this is your speedwork for the week)
Bike 45 minutes once a week (mostly easy with a few accelerations)
Brick (Bike/run workout once a week)
Long ride (starting about 100 and building to 3:00 the week before race day)

This plan is pretty easy I think - you've got 6 workouts per week and a rest day.  This remember, is just to FINISH, but should at least get you ready for that, and you could do more if you felt up for it.

Good Luck!

Ok, went out for a 19:06 minute run. Left leg is cramping real bad after 6 days rest from the run. I'm really thinking that my nutrition has gotten so bad recently that I am in some serious potassium deficiency since my nose is bleeding daily also which someone said is also a potassium thing. Anyone know if that is true?

My lungs said go on, my leg caused me to run/walk it.

It really means a lot to me that you all are trying to get me started again.

Will certainly remember the 5 minute rule. The door is the hardest hurdle.

Thanks, Jeff

I agree, got one I am signing up for tomorrow. It is the same Olympic (and only tri I have done) as last year.

Gonna fix this cramping thing and get back to it. I tink I might have been hesitant due to the cramping lately. Time todo something about it!!!!!!

GRRRRRR or PURRRRRR whichever fits the thread.

You get full credit for the 19 minute run. BRAVO to you for getting out there.

As for the cramping, is it that you need to stretch, or is it that you're not getting enough water/electrolytes?

And, for the record, you can either growl OR purr, not both. Cats that growl (big game cats) can't purr and vice versa.

I honestly think it is a hydration/electrolyte problem. Gonna fix that.

Speaking of cats, even my cat is a clydesdale.

I wish!!!!!!!

I work in the junkyard so I have to walk in between the car rows, lots of standing too.

I worked at Fed Ex last winter which certainly was a leg building exprerience. Lots of squats.

One mind game I play at the gym is this: say I go in with the goal of doing a 3 mile run; once I make that goal then the calorie counter in the machine might say something like 323 so I say to myself, well, I'd like to see a nice number there...I'll keep going till I've got 350; I make that then notice that the time is an odd number, so I decide to keep going till I have a nice number there. And so on. I can ususally psyche myself into another mile or so doing that. Also makes the boredom of the gym more tolerable.

Wow! You just managed to bring back all the suppressed memories I have of training on a treadmill. I, too, wanted to have "even numbers". I also would play the game of "I won't look at the display until the next commercial." Or, even better, "I have to run at this pace until the news anchor says a word containing the letter 'z'."

Ahhh... the games people play.

How long I run on a treadmill depends on what song my ipod is playing. If it is a catchy, fast tempo song, then I would run till the song is over. If it is a sappy ballad, then I would take a walk.
