Pre-race routine:

This race was going to be different because it was at 2pm, so no wake up and go. Ate breakfast of eggs, bacon, grits, and cofee at around 9:45am. I then went super old school ala Steve Jones and actually sat in a hot bath for about 15min @ about 11:30am to try and warm up my creaky old man legs.
Event warmup:

Did a slow run of 2.5mi about 30min prior and then did about 3 60yards strides just before getting on the line.

Comments:

Started out what felt fast, but comfortable. I was lucky that I got to run with a group of people in the front. Hit mile 1 in 5:08 and it did not feel to bad, although I knew it was fast and that I was going to have to grit my teeth towards the end.
Hit mile 2 in 5:25 and that included 1 decent sharp hill. Still had the group together except the winner who went away a little.
The last 1.1mi had a 300yd up (not steep) then back down the same grade then you had to really go up a tough climb. I really started to struggle up the last climb to a point that my arm sactually felt a little numb. The home straight was flat and I was able to keep it going to make sure of a sub 17
What would you do differently?:

be more consistant in training and stop missing days. Keep from get down and demotivated when things don't seem to be going well.
Post race
Warm down:

1.5mi really slow jog

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of conditioning

Event comments:

I had a decent January running, but then missed 9 days being sick. I never felt like I was in very good shape prior to getting sick and then after 9 days off I felt really out of shape and started to lose motivation. I have had a really spotty Feb with running going like 4 days on 4 days off type of thing.
I decided to jump in this race to really get an idea of where I am exactly, so I could maybe train accordingly. I was also hoping running a race might spark a fire and I will refind some motivation.
I truly did not know what to expect and was really thinking I might have a hard time breaking 18 min.
I ran a solid race and dug deep at the end. I am super stoked to see that I am not in terrible shape and I now have a really good starting point to put in some focused training.
