JoshKaptur - 2011-03-02 10:29 AM yep - handful of chips here, two cookies there, candy bar there, soda there, two beers later, couple grabs of mixed nuts before you go to bed... and you've done 1/2 to 3/4 of your calorie allowance for the day eating total crap without even realizing that.  Eat 3 square meals a day plus that and you'll be wondering how you got heavy while working out (been there done that).  Same story for me with a bowl of m&m's at work... I just grab a few when I walk by that office, but by the end of the day I've eaten 10 or more handfulls of them.

Lots of those snacks (like those chips) are just PACKED with calories but not very satisfying filling... and they combine sugar/salt/fat in what "the end of overeating" calls a "hyper-palatable" food... a food that tells your body you want more, even when you don't need more.

Think of sugar/fat/salt combo snacks as homeostasis bombs... from an evolutionary perspective, they were super rare and precious for thousands and thousands of years, and it would do you good to eat as much of them whenever you could find/kill them.  Now they are readily available EVERYWHERE (wrapped in plastic).

A cucumber with salt and pepper will fill you right up way more than a bag of chips, and cost you 16 calories... and believe it or not is kind of tasty.

I've got to agree with Josh here, especially about the cucumber. Mindful eating makes a phenomonal difference to weight management. I used to think that I could relax on the diet front because of the exercise I was doing.... wrong.
You need to be very careful about what goes in if you want real and lasting change.

Good luck John. I know you can do it.

I will try this out and report back.. I quite like cucumber.. but usually on white bread with lots of butter.. hehe

and yeah, I am basically avoiding anything out of a foil package.. I'm snacking on sultanas, dates and almonds.. and not a lot, just a few every now and then.

I am tending to find the hours after dinner the toughest.. lots of snacks in the house. But willpower is winning.

Guys, you've motivated me to get serious about diet. I'm logging weight on the Weigh in Wed. thread. Since the new year, I've gone from complete slob couch potato to working out 5-6 days a week. Main goal to improve run. I've lost only a few token pounds while expecting a slow but steady loss. My only real success with dieting is Atkins a few years ago. Worked great but made me grouchy. The 30 lbs I lost came back with a vengeance. I thought I could do it by just more exercise but clearly not the case.

Good work on avoiding the pie mate. Although they are yummy they are evil in dietary terms.

The take home message I got from the dietician yesterday was limit fats and sugars wherever possible. He particularly noted dried fruits, nuts, avocado and any oils used in cooking, also butter/margarine spreads. That was hard for me to hear as I like dried fruits and love nuts. I nearly always opt for avocado in salads / wraps too.

His advice was to eat more early in the day so that you minimise the hunger at night when your willpower is going to be tested most.

Thought I'd offer that up for you. Good Luck mate.

I bought a non-stick pan, a good one, now I don`t have to use any oils for cooking just a little water if it gets a bit dry!!! Just a little tip.

well.. been a huge training week, but no weight loss

still on 133.7kg.. which is fine, I have been doing a lot of work. See what happens next week.

diet has not been as rigid.. been carbing a bit, but not overdoing calories.

had another good run/walk this morning, and looking at doing a practice tri on the weekend with a couple of my training buddies.

First race is next week.. sprint distance. I just hope the river stops flowing or it will be changed to a duathlon.. ugh..

Good luck with the race next week mate. With all the rain you guys have had up there I'm sure that you won't have to travel far for the swim leg!

Keep up the good fight and let us know how you get on...

thanks for the prod man.. need to write more in here.

another kg down.. 132.5.. starting to really notice this loss in small ways, even though it is a drop in the ocean.. sounds silly, but it will be awesome to get under 130..

the rain up here just will not let up.. been running and riding in the rain.. which I don't really mind to be honest.

The local club has a sprint tri this saturday, which will be turned into a duathlon.. much to the delight of the lean runners that can't swim.. lol.. The usually calm river has become a bit of a torrent from all the rain.

well.. some big news.. I have signed up to do the half iron distance at Challenge Cairns.. that is in June. Hoping for a 7:29.. jokes aside.. my swim and bike will hopefully get me into the position to struggle to a 7:00.. 21km of run/walk will decide it I guess.

Hey John, remember the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step...

As long as you are heading in the right direction with your weight-loss then the rate is irrelevant.

I have become quite accustomed to training in the rain. I actually prepfer it to windy conditions. I was to wait until the sun was out and the sky was blue before I trained I doubt I would get out much at all lately!

Congrats on the Half Iron sign-up as well. You will do well, I'm sure and it will be a massive achievement to brag about!

Of course I am expecting lots of training updates and a wicked Race Report at the end...

hey Gus, thanks for being persistent mate.. it is a little like that.. doing a *lot* of training.

weight loss was pretty much nothing the last week.. probably due to lax diet.. nothing too bad though. I am fitting into clothes that I couldn't get over my a couple of months ago, so all is well.

had a run of bad luck too.. my garmin 305 fell off my bike going over some railway lines.. a couple of cars run over before I can rescue it.. boy o boy.. I feel naked training without it.

then.. innocently raise the seat on my TT bike a little.. start tightening it.. PING.. bloody frame is broken ! Ive done some farmyard engineering to fix it.. but bloody hell !!

Man, you have had some bad luck. It sounds like you are being tested and you need to stay focussed and commit to your training. I can't tell you the number of times I have had 'issues' present themselves which has tested my fortitude. Up till now these things would have stopped me. But now I am better at rolling with the misfortune. I hope you persist and keep doing what you need to do.

Looking forwrd to reading the Half Iron Race Report mate.

yeah Gus, I hope  I can remember the little things and make a half decent report to put up.. I must admit that I trawl through the reports.. they really are such an inspiration.

snuck in a little run this afternoon.. just 4k.. no Garmin <sniff> If anything it was almost a relief not to have something watching and recording.. and I had a pretty good little 'jog'

I have dug out the old cateye bike computer for the bike.. so all is good there.. I might not bother to get another one.. I'm not trying to rotate the earth or anything.

did a 55km ride on sunday morning.. cut it short because the seat clamp had let go of the seat. Was maintaining a 30 average pretty easily, so bike is on track.

My plan for the HIM is for a 48 minute swim, 3 hour ride and 6 minute transitions. this leaves me 3.5 hours for the 21k run.. so 10 minute pace is the target.. Ive done a couple of 8k jog/walks at 9 minute.. just got to keep it up.
