I'll be deciding tomorrow whether or not to go the wetsuit route.  The one wetsuit I rented (Blueseventy Reaction sleeveless) two weeks ago for practice I thought was just a hint too tight, but it may have been due to my first time wearing a wetsuit.  Might just go with a tri outfit for the swim and roll with that depending on how I feel trying on wetsuits tomorrow.  Not sure how comfortable I'll be with a tri suit accentuating my non aerodynamic midsection for the whole day.  Might switch to an Under Armour shirt for the bike/run.  I get the impression a lot of people wear tri suits for the whole race.  Plus, I'm crossing my fingers that the Hudson current will put my fears of the swim part of the race to rest.   :-)

And i've got a very strange combination of "OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!" and "OH MY GOD?!?!?!?!?!???!?!?!?!?!" running through my god. First it's the positive exclamatory, 2nd is the gut wrenching WTF did I get myself into. Guess it's time to put up or shut up. I'm still sticking to my goal of Sub 3:00 for my first Olympic.

just in case anyone else was curious, they hope to have everybody in the water by 7:15 am. super kudos to lauren @ NYCTRI for a super fast email response. That came as a pleasant surprise, esp considering that it must be chaos there this whole week.

Thanks for the info! The sooner I can get started, the better. Not sure how long I'm going to take since I'm thrilled to have been able to get to this point anyway and my goal for my first time is just to finish...

Good luck to everyone!  Not racing this year but it was my first tri ever 3 years ago.  Don't be nervous, you'll all have a great time.  I don't post here super often, but I'm an opera singer as well as a triathlete, and am honored to be singing the anthem for you all at the swim start.  Hopefully they'll let me stick around and high-five people, so say hi if you see me!

This is my first time doing the NYC tri and was just reading the athlete guide and have to say it seems like a logistical nightmare so far.  How is everyone getting back to the trans area after finishing the race,  I was thinking of taking a cab but realized i'll have two heavy bags of gear along with my bike and still have to get back to my car which will be parked somewhere near the hotel in midtown.

Thanks!!!  Same to you.  I'm very excited about doing this, it's just that because of some of my own personal struggles I haven't been able to train as much as I would have liked so I'm nervous about being sufficiently ready for it.  I was tempted to defer, but for me personally completing this is very important so I'm going to go out there, give it my best shot, and have as much fun as I can with it...

Just thought of this now (I'm completely new with this whole scene so...).  I'm going to be riding my Gary Fisher hybrid for this race.  I have a rack on the back and going to have my bag on top of that with bike stuff.  I'm guessing it's okay, but to be sure, I can have a rack on my bike, right?  Not quite up to the Cervelo P3 or Trek Speed Concept bikes yet.   ;-)

i believe they have petty cabs that will take you from the finish to the transition area.  but it's a pretty easy walk there.  It is a bit of a challenge to get your stuff back from transition to hotel/home.  a few yrs ago my wife took my bags in a cab and i rode home, not sure if this is a possibility for you.

in the beginning of this thread, some posters have attempted to decipher the tide tables and max current.  Now that the start is time trial and everyone should be in the water by 7:15am, can someone predict the effect of the tides?  i'm in red transition, M35-39 AG.

also, does a possible thunderstorm overnight have an effect?

i'm obviously obsessing about the Hudson Smile

The ebb tide starts at 6:17, max ebb is at around 9:58 AM.

The later waves have more help from the current. I think it's really hard to tell when you or myself (30-34) will splash to be honest given this is the first year of a TT start. Given the first wave is at 5:50 and there is a 20 minute break between yellow and red transitions, that should allow for a decent amount of current for the 35-39 AG.

Where did you read that everyone's in by 7:15?
