bel83 - 2011-03-01 1:30 PM so I have used a foam roller for my ITBS and hip when I was doing PT a year or two ago but once that was resolved have not had one or needed to use one since. I am thinking of getting one but am curious about how you use it properly on your calves as that sounds...awkward to me. Anyone have a link to how you roll your calves I can check out later (work has restricted access for lots of sites, just luckily not BT Smile  )

While sitting on the floor with my legs out in front of me, I just place the roller (I use the torturous black one) underneath my calves and prop myself up on my hands and roll forward and back.  Sometimes I'll do both calves at the same time...and sometimes I'll do one at a time (by placing one leg on top of the other).

Oh yea, it hurts! So much hurt. Learn to love it! And then once you learn to love it, the pain will probably subside from the loosening of your muscles from using it so much.

After reading articles and seeing videos about the benefits of the foam roller I decided to buy.  It came yesterday. After my run I decided to try it out....Holy Hell!  Is it suppose to hurt so bad? It felt like I had little hard knots in my calves and quads. I tried to do my IT Band but it hurt so bad I had to stop.

Either I'm reaping the benefits of the roller for my muscles OR I'm doing something wrong.

No one is the video I saw seemed to be in pain, they are even smiling.

Others experience this?

Find the painful spot and hold it there for 20-30 seconds. You want to do this so the Golgi tendon kicks in and "relaxes" the muscles (but you don't feel it really). Just rolling slowly over the area is not proper foam rolling. Keep at it. You obviously need to work on some tight areas.

This is great advice.

My one amendment would be this. The whole darn thing hurts.  There isn't (for me) "the" painful spot.  Still, if you pay attention, you can feel the adhesions and knots and such and you need to focus on those spots to release them.  You won't necessarily feel the release when it happens, but you might feel that the next time you roll the spot, it isn't there.  At least, that's my experience.

Picked up one of these rollers yesterday primarily to work on some IT band tightness.  WOW you guys weren't kidding about the level of discomfort these foam dudes can dish out!  I'll be following the advice of everyone and stick with it throughout the entire season.  Flexibility has been very low on my priority list since I started doing triathlons but it's time to "up the ante" and get back some flexibility.

I'll be working several muscles in addition to the IT band.  Looking forward to experiencing some results.
