If you see this really cool, kind of dumpy restaurant with Cajun food, and the raw oysters are on special for $1 each, pass on this. That is all, gotta run.....(pun intended)

Personally I would pass on any "Cajun" restaurant outside of south Louisiana.

Yeah, I get that. The craving for a boiled shrimp / crawfish combo was compelling me. The oysters could have happened anywhere, but when they're "on special" for $1/ea, there's got to be a reason and it's not a good one...

Hmmmm... could be a little Vibrio?  How long after you ate did you get said problem?

8 hours. Woke me up at 4AM with the power of the pewp compelling me. And after ordering the hottest offered shellfish boil, that hasn't been pleasant...

Could be Vibrio parahaemolyticus.  Then again, it could also just be a rejection of the spices in the boil.

Drink lots and lots and lots of water.  Biggest thing you can do is stay hydrated.

I am eating devilled eggs made with Ranch dressing 5 months past the expiration date! and the bottom few millimetres of whatever other condiments were in my fridge. oh and the cat already ate half of one of the eggs even before i could put the filling back in. and I just had food poisoning last week!

wish me luck!!!

(Until tonight, i wondered why i had a CAT named Suicide ...)

I personally stay away from all "Specials" at restaurants.  Specials are usually yesterdays leftovers disguised as something else or some food that they need to get rid of asap.  The oysters were probably on the verge of going bad, so they became the 'special'.  Just my two cents.

Interesting theory.... i guess i figure that if you can't trust a restaurant to serve you fresh and safe food, you probably shouldn't eat there.

I won't even get fish anywhere north of Jackson, MS.  Even then, there's only about two or three restaurants I trust.  As for oysters?  I better be a short walk from seeing water and they better shuck it in front of me.

There are restaurants where the "special" is leftovers, and there are restaurants where it's actually something special the chef is doing for the night.  Menu prices typically give you a clue as to which one you're at.

It is a proven scientific fact that the alcohol in good beer (sweetwater, Sierra nevada, etc) kills all creepy crawlies in oysters.  No, really.

The ratio of oysters to beers must be < 3:1 as I had 2 beers and 1 dozen oysters. Plus I had two tall ones before going there. More like 1:1? Stella Artois and some local brew.

Yeah because there is no fresh  or salt water north of MS.

Ever heard of a little thing called the Great Lakes or the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans?

Guess I needed to expand my comment to include every where I have, or potentially will travel.  So, if it can't be driven from the dock to the restaurant and put on my plate within the same day, then I won't order it.  If I'm skeptical that it hasn't been, I won't order seafood.  I do realize it probably won't kill me.  It just tastes bad.

I've had excellent seafood in Chicago and Boston.
