This will be my first time doing this triathlon. How cold is the water at Cottage Lake for swimming in June? As a smaller lake, I would expect it to be a little warmer. Has anyone done this triathlon in June without a wetsuit?

Most western Washington lakes barely get into the low 60's, if that, by the end of June. I'd strongly suggest renting a wetsuit if you don't have one or don't want to buy one. But the other part of it is that if you're doing the double, putting the wetsuit on for the second go-round isn't gonna happen. Your call...

This must be a pretty laid back race. From active.com's website "Once off the beach, the walk to transition is on grass."

Sounds like fun, maybe the September event.

Lisa and I were at the September event last summer (helping with the timing). They must have had about 150-200 participants overall (between the tri and the tri-and-tri-again). Just guessing. It was done very well, not as "laid back" a feel as Bob Green's events in Elma, but still a fun atmosphere.

It's a good event.  There's a lot of first timers but also some fast people who use it as an early-season tune up.  Friendly atmosphere.

I did this as my first tri ever a couple of years ago-it was a fantastic introduction to the sport.  The husband and I volunteered at it last fall which was also fun-it was great to cheer people on.  I'm currently encouraging friends who want to try a tri to give it a shot.

Oh yeah and to answer the original question - the water is pretty cold in June, even in that lake.  I would bring a wetsuit.

This was the first tri I did and I did it prior to my plan to do a first tri.  It was an incredible experience.  I get cold easily and wore a full wetsuit both in June and September (which by the way was a downpour).  I began swimming lessons one year before so I was not a good swimmer (in fact I had the slowest time of all swimmers!) and I think the buoyancy of the wetsuit was helpful for my confidence.

I saw some people without wetsuits and since it is a relatively short distance, I don't think anyone suffered from hyperthermia.  Cottage Lake is a small lake and the distance away from shore is not very far.

This is a wonderful first tri to do.
