Master 2014 Ohio | Subject: RE: Supplements A well balanced diet containing the right amounts of fruit, veges, fat, protien and carbs is all you need. If you feel you want something else I suggest a one-a-day type multi-vitamin. If you have certian special needs you doctor can tell you what to take. For instance I take a glucosamine chondroitian pill for my knees (recommended by my doctor, of course) Anything more than that and you're just creating very expensive pee. |

Member 221 Lancaster | Subject: RE: Supplements The only thing I use is protein and it's in the form of a $1 bar as opposed to the $3 shakes. I normally just eat one after working out. I use it more for muscle recovery than in hopes of looking like the brick sh*thouse on the wrapper. Don't know how beneficial it really is but it's supposed to help.
That said I got about $200 worth of free samples from the Arnold Expo this weekend. I can't even pronounce half of the stuff it's just the old theory of it's free, take one. I'll likely donate it to the muscle heads at the Y. |

Veteran 274 | Subject: RE: Supplements Chocolate milk is my choice for recovery. And if you need to build muscle protein is what you need. I have tried almost every supplement at some point in time. I have no idea why I keep trying them because I have noticed nothing from any of them other them a nice low fat protein shake. I have tried large dosage of glucosamine that David takes for about one year with no results. What I think has helped my knees the most is just getting them stronger by slowly upping miles followed by some good protein like chocolate milk, eggs, or lean chicken are my favorite. The best thing you can do for your training is staying consistent building miles with proper recovery. |

Expert 664 Ross, Ohio | Subject: RE: Supplements As someone who works in this industry testing these products I can tell you not all supplements are created equal. It is the dirty little(huge actually) secret of the industry. Basically what happens is the raw ingredient supplier tests using a method that is cheap and easy. When the manufacturer tests(if they test) using a more specific method it will show the ingredient is not as pure or potent as what they thought they were buying. However many of these small manufacturers can not afford to send it back or lack the resources to dispute the claims so they end up using it as they have a COA stating that it is good. I am not permitted to provide names of the bad companies but I will tell you to go with manufacturers that guarantee their labels. Believe it or not Walmart and Costco are actually some of the better manufacturers. This is mostly due to the fact that their programs are much more robust and they have the ability and cash to monitor their suppliers where other small manufacturers do not. Just my two cents. |

Member 221 Lancaster | Subject: RE: Supplements Damn Buckeye, you make protein sales sound like the cocaine trade. Stuff gets cut at every stop. One of the funniest things I've seen on the labels are the amount per serving. One company will advertise 20g per shake while another will advertise 40g. You look at the label and the only difference is company B uses 2 scoops for a serving instead of one but people will still buy it seeing the bigger number. Nevermind they run out twice as fast and pay more for the "increased protein formula". |

Veteran 148 | Subject: RE: Supplements If you are just starting out, then stick with a healthy diet and maybe a multi-vitamin. Many of the supplements are for athletes working out 18+ hours per week. Or killing themselves for at high performance levels. Chocolate milk is a great recovery drink for beginners. |

New user 91 Cincinnati | Subject: RE: Supplements If there was a such thing as an "absolute" supplement, we would all know about it. And it probably wouldn't be cheap. Like the others have said, just stick with a good diet. I have tried a lot of things throughout the years, some work, some don't. |

Sadly the FDA does not have the man power to inspect the companies so people are getting away with it. The testing for these products is something that has just started being required(within the last 18 months). How long have supplements been around? Protein is not as bad as the true supplements which would be the botanicals, herbals, etc. With protein I can tell you, you get what you pay for. Even with protein there is a difference in quality. Personally I tend to buy the better protein and it has paid off for me. |

Expert 664 Ross, Ohio | Subject: RE: Supplements Yes, EAS was the first company to fully guarantee their labels. That is the single reason they are fully endorsed by the NFL plus the quality is top notch. Not just a marketing scheme. They have great stuff. |
