Overcast
Total Time = 2h 40m
Overall Rank = 263/457
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 2/12
Pre-race routine:

Mess up booking for beach house at Middleton for long weekend. Panic. Find last minute shitty accommodation for 10 people. Organise two kids for their Short Course race at 8:30, then get myself sorted for 9;30 start.
ie NO pre-race routine
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 26m 31s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 46s / 100 meters
Comments:

Breathing restricting in wetsuit.
Ashamed to not fit it anymore.
What would you do differently?:

Keep training well ... get more
confident about racing a triathlon swim rather than just
thinking about finishing it.

Transition 1
  • 05m 30s
What would you do differently?:

Sleeveless wetsuit or none at all.
Learn how to get out of it.
Bike
  • 1h 21m
  • 38.8 kms
  • 28.74 km/hr
Comments:

Out and back on hilly course. 4 decent climbs in total. Some crosswinds but hard to say conditions were a big factor on anyones time. Cool temps.
Worked hard on this he window - too intense!! managed a couple gels as an afterthought and a bit of water and gatorade.

Passed 8 or 9 women and was passed by none! A first!bike ride. Have to be happy with it.
Fueling ideas went right out the window as I was so intent on racing hard. Had some mechanicals before the ride which didnt get sorted so shifting was very difficult and lost some momentum each time I wanted to get back into big chain ring.
What would you do differently?:

Get bike sorted.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

I did it again! Ran past my bike in the rack. I actually had to laugh that I could
do it again.
What would you do differently?:

Get the most obnoxiously colourful Transition towel that money can buy.
Run
  • 46m 41s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 40s  min/km
Comments:

According to others I "looked great", "like a machine", "finished strong", "you could have kept going forever". That's what they thought. I felt as though I could have stepped off the course and sat down on the lounge (see above) and had a champagne with the locals. It was hard work! But if push came to shove, and I had seen another woman with 45 on her leg ahead of me..... her ass was mine. lol.
What would you do differently?:

Happy with myself. Training is kicking in....cant wait to see how much I can improve.
Ran my PB of 45:10 (not in a tri - in a 10k race) at the age of 25 so nearly 22 years later running 46:21 off a hilly bike ride is something to be proud of ..... and I am. :-)
Post race
Warm down:

hugging kids.
queuing for 30 minutes for a coffee that I had been dying for all morning. (was freezing after finishing race).
Waited around for HOURS for awards ceremony. Training partner won her AG - great. Another friend won the mixed team - yay good for her. I came second but awards were only for the winners. One day I am going to bring home some hardware in a triathlon!!! (missed my trophy in Cancun as I missed the ceremony !)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Same as everyone......age, training, talent

Event comments:

South Australia is impoverished when it comes to its race offerings. With the loss of Murray Man there are no long course races. No HIM. Only two Olympic distance races and a handful of uninspiring sprint races as part of a series of summer races.
This race is about an hour out of Adelaide which is just far enough for atheltes and their families to travel and stay over for the long weekend. It makes for a very pleasant family environment. There is a short course tri, a mini tri, and 5k run along with the Olympic Tri.
The organizer, Sid James, is local tri legend and puts on a really nice local race. It is worth noting that 90 % of the local business are sponsors of the race......it is truly a community event.
