Age Group Rank = 17/38
Pre-race routine:

Up before the alarm at 3:40 am, wake L and pick up mom on the way down. Ate the traditional half chocolate chip CLIF bar and a little water. There early and got the first parking spot in the dirt, picked up my packet and got transition set up. Talked to a dude doing his first race and gave him a few tips, felt good to help out a bit.
Event warmup:

A little stretching, probably not enough.
Swim
  • 10m 56s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m / 100 yards
Comments:

Planned to go out fast this time and avoid the ten second count to get started. Everyone was spread out on the shore so there was no problem with getting hit or kicked. Swallowed a couple gulps of lake water, that sucked. Caught several people in the previous wave, felt like my swim went ok. Much slower than I had anticipated though based on my last really good swim before the race.
What would you do differently?:

Get better at my three stroke breathing in the open water.
Transition 1
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

Wetsuit came right off, had to wipe the sand off my feet which took up a little time.
What would you do differently?:

Get a little faster, need to pick up some time here, not getting any better.
Bike
  • 40m 12s
  • 14 miles
  • 20.90 mile/hr
Comments:

Still my strongest leg, super bumpy road out of transition had my aero bottle bouncing all over the place. A little traffic on the bumpy road, cleared up after that. A few folks riding out to the line made passing tough. Passed a bunch of people, got passed by just a few. Felt like my straw was a little too far away, need to tweak that. Went too hard on the bike as revealed in my bad run. Had fun out there on the bike though.
What would you do differently?:

Take it a bit easier to give myself more for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Love the dudes yelling "SLOW DOWN!" They seem all pissed off, maybe it's just me....riding too fast. Couldn't get my bike racked right away and got a little flustered with it.
What would you do differently?:

Work on racking the bike.
Run
  • 26m 12s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Horrible. So much worse than last year, really disappointed with it. Caught up with Matt on the run which was cool, apologized for ruining his finisher pic last year, he was gracious. Talked a little bit and then he pulled away like I was running in mud. Good first mile then just crumbled, sucks.
What would you do differently?:

Work harder.
Post race
Warm down:

No stretching which might have haunted me later, feet were torn up for days after, very sore. Had some snacks and had to jet to get home for A's tournament game. Always in a hurry, would be nice to just chill out after a race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Maybe only doing run/walk? My training numbers are down from what they were last year so probably overall lack of fitness. Need to work hard to be ready to put in a better time at Lake Perris.

Event comments:

Great race again, the shirt was awesome this time and the finisher's medal artwork is rad.

Overall great race, even if you were disappointed with your run. It sounds like a good learning experience.

Time saved from last year, no matter how small, means improvement!  Sounds like a great race.  And 8:44/mile is very respectable expecailly after riding at 20+ mph!

Great job!
