I'm in.  Who else?

Yes this course is boring, early in the season, there is pretty close to zero crowd support and it's in the boone docks...  but it's FLAT & FAST!!!  This race is as no frills as it gets ... but it's where I have my half marathon PR and I'm shooting for another one this Sunday.   I mean, for 20 bucks they shut-down Nicolls Rd just for me.  Doesn't get better than that   I'm just hoping for no wind.

Who else is ready to Rock It in Suffolk this Sunday??

I'll be there.  Can't beat $25 doy of entry fee for a Half.  I'm hoping to get about 5-6 miles in before the gun.  No trying for a PR for me.

 Good Luck though!

Not sure if they did it this year, but in years past you could pre-register for 18 bucks!!  I mean, where else can you run a half marathon for 18 bucks!!

Oh wait, pre-registration is now 20 bucks.  Still an amazing deal!!  Considering the shirt, on course drinks, and post-race food, it's a break even

Yesterday's forecast had me a little worried as they were calling for a 40% chance of snow flurries.  But today's forecast is looking MUCH BETTER

My only legit concern is the wind.

Yeah, so it's looking dry for Sunday - but it's going to be a little chilly, and news12 mentioned it will be cloudy due to a storm south of the island.  I just hope that doesn't translate into = WIND.  For this race, I'll take rain or snow over wind any day.

If it is windy, it's most-likely going to be windy when we hit Mark Tree road and turn-around to come back.  If you can, draft off someone.  Form an alliance even.  Tell the other runner, I'll do the work and block the wind for 1/4 mile, then fall behind the other person (who will be feeling fresh having spent the last 1/4 mile in your draft) and let them do the work.  Do this on and off every 2 to 3 minutes.  It's legal and you'll be amazed how much energy it saves.

BT'ER Meeting Place/Time:  In years past (the cool kids that we are )  we sit at the top of the bleachers to the left.  So when you walk into the gynasium, we'll be to the left, top benches, first or second section.  I'll be sitting there with Mike (mscotthall) from around 8:20 to 8:40 AM.  I'll be wearing a dark red fleece, and I got a Lance Armstrong super-short haircut going on.  Super short.  Mike, he'll be wearing a pink and purple polka-dotted, cow-pattern jumpsuit.  You can't miss us

Found a nice map of the race on-line.  http://www.usatf.org/events/courses/maps/images/NY98002DK.png   It's from 1998 but the course hasn't changed since.  Only change is the second water stop is on the overpass for 25A.

I looked at my splits from last year and the year before and my slowest miles were 8, 9 and 10.  With 9-10 being the slowest.  This is due to the elevation-gain, coupled with the headwind.  And the opposite side of the course miles 3, 4 and 5 were my fastest - 3-4 being very fast due to elevation-loss and tailwinds.  The rest of the course is flat and fairly even.  I think this important to know because most of us have a goal time and 'Pace' in mind.  If during miles 3 thru 5 your 10 to 20% faster than your goal pace, this is fine.  Enjoy the free speed.  This doesn't mean you're going to blow-up   If your 10 to 20% faster for Mile 1 & 2, then slow down to goal pace.

After the turn-around at miles 8 through 10, prepare for some false flats and a climb back up to the college into considerably stiff headwinds.  If you can partner up with another runner and take turns drafting off one another every 2',  or tuck in behind a group, that would be the smartest strategy.  Keep in the back of your mind that once you climb back to, and past the college, the winds ease up and the course flattens out and you should be able to get back to you goal pace.  *** When you finish the climb up to the college, not only will you have the toughest part of the course behind you, this is the only point where there are crowds cheering.  Use the boost from the crowds to energize you for that final 5k.  ***  Once you hit the final turn-around before the expressway, you'll have tailwinds pushing you to the finish line for that final mile and a half stretch.

Of the past 4 consecutive years I've run this course, only once has there not been any wind.  If by some miracle there is no wind tomorrow - enjoy it!!  But considering how windy it is today, I'd put money on it being windy tomorrow.

Lastly, the only hills on this course are the overpasses -- which are perfect hills in the sense that the grade and distance up are the same grade and distance down, which makes them perfectly fair.  If you pace evenly up them, and then push right before the very top, you'll get some nice free speed while recovering on the equal downhill.

If anyone else who has run this course before has any tips to offer, we'd love to hear them.

I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT RACE TOMORROW!!

Good morning.  29 with a wind out of the NW 10-14 mph.  High of 44, but we won't see that during the race.  So it looks like a head wind first, with a nice tailwind to the finish.  Much better, I think.

I will be out early to run a few miles before the start.  Hoping to finish the half around 1:50-1:55.  I'm wearing red tech shirt, red vest.  I'll try to duck into the gym before the start.

Otherwise, have a great race everyone!!

It was a tough day at the office.  The buzz words were: Wind and Cold.  Pre-race the BT Crew represented with myself, mscotthall, sevenride, sammeg, Luby, and a guest appearance by Elroy303 all chillin' in the gymnasium.  Congrats to everyone for toughing it out there on the course.  Perhaps we'll have a reunion at the Long Island Half Marathon in just 5 weeks.  Cause, errr... some of us have a score still to settle.

I'm thinking about the LI Half as I got my whooped out there.  1:42-need to drop another 10 lbs and min per mile.  It was a good training run.  On the brighter side, I'm starting to see some life in these old legs.  Great seeing everyone out there.

Amazing how the wind in the warm up run was not as strong as the wind in the race.  Glad I only ran the 5K. Elroy also raced the day before if this is the same Elroy from Sunrise Tri
