Thanks for sharing, Alice!

It's hard to accept the long view sometimes, but story of this 'non-athlete-but-avid-cyclist' is similar.

Dec 2008- Gassed @ 50M, (Why the heck did I agree to that charity sprint tri thing next Spring???)

Apr 2009- 2:43/100M pace @ sprint tri (pool swim)

Apr 2010- 2:25/100M pace @ same event

Aug 2010- 2:20/100M pace for 1500M (Oly)

Currently my best sprint is ~1:45/100M, & today swam 1500 @ 2:10 pace on only moderate effort.   Still dislike swimming, but I would prob progress faster if I swam more & had the time (-er guts) to join a masters team.

Thanks so much for this post.  My current times (for meters) are dead on for your 2000 times.  I've been getting to the pool 2-3x a week and although swimming often feels smoother, I'm not getting any faster.  Last night in particular was awful, it felt like I was swimming through wet cement.  I'm doing a TI clinic this weekend, hopefully that will help.

Thanks again for the encouragement and 'light at the end of the tunnel'!  And of course congratulations on your improvement!

Let me know if that TI clinic helps. I am thinking about it but it's nice chunck of change so I really have to think about it.  I started swimming from "scratch" in Dec 09..took about a month & a half of lessons once a week & then a few others along the way..I am a work in progress but feel like I need  to keep at it.  I am doing a few sprints along with road races this season.  I really want to improve in the water though! To the OP:  story is so inspiring and makes me want to go to the pool RIGHT NOW!!

I had a quick question regarding swimming with a masters team.  Do they expect you to know all four strokes?  That's the only thing holding me back.  I don't want to be the "problem" person in my lane.

Me, too! Like Melbo, I'm right at your 2000 speed. It does give me hope that if I keep at it, things will improve.

And I also had one of those days last week when it just felt like I was fighting the water. I've heard that implementing changes can feel like you are getting worse. Good luck with the TI clinic. Laughing

whoops! Sorry for the double post.  Hit the wrong button a few times.

I wouldn't let that keep you from joining.  In my experience they don't expect you to know all the strokes to come to practice.  I have been the slowest person in the slowest lane, getting passed like crazy.  Coach taught me to do the butterfly, which was comical.  There were others that didn't know how or were not good at the fly either.   If you find a large enough master's team, you will not be the only one not knowing the 4 strokes!
