Pre-race routine:

Picked up Natalie and drove to the town. She helped navigate. Race starts at noon, so nothing to eat after a normal breakfast (buttermilk whole-wheat pancakes). Drank a glass of gatorade after registering.
Event warmup:

Stood around chatting with friends. Did jog about 200 yards just before the start.

Comments:

Ran 13.1 a week before in 1:52 "cruising." Thought if I could just do that again, I'd PR by 7 minutes and if I pushed a bit, I might break 1:50. 25 mph winds were straight out of the South which worked well for the course layout. It would have been brutal to have that wind out of the West. Tried to start "easy" and settled into a low-8-minute/mile pace. I added 20 seconds during the first headwind leg and picked up a few of those elsewhere. The group pretty quickly settled into near-final-order and with only a hundred runners, there wasn't much passing after the first 2 miles. I did have 2 runners pass me near the 4th corner and I passed them back (never to see them again) when they stopped for a drink. Picked off another runner in the 2-mile stretch and another in the 1-mile headwind. Caught someone at the 4th corner aid station (I think) and then another guy in the mile back towards town. Felt...strange...to be the one passing people late in the race...
What would you do differently?:

Probably drink something. I ran past every aid station without stopping. I got lucky that it wasn't warmer. Debated getting something on the second loop but my stomach started churning from the headwind effort. By the time I got to the 4th-corner aid station, I only had 1.5 miles to go and figured I could tough it out.

I was rewarded with a PR by 12:41!
Post race
Warm down:

Got a bottle of water, a banana, and a couple of cookies and walked back to watch other friends come towards the finish. Walked around for about 30 minutes, stretching some.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Genetics...I was talking to my mom later and told her my HR averaged 180 for the 1:45. We chatted about it and she asked what I usually train at (I try to keep it below 175 and would prefer below 170). She said when she does hard racewalk intervals, she'll see 175 on her HRM and she's 67, so I get it naturally...

Event comments:

Pretty good race. Nice that I could show up an hour before the race and pay $25 to run a half-marathon. Since they get a lot of walk-up registrations, I don't have a problem with minimal post-race activities.

Performance: Good
Average HR for the race was 180. First mile was flaky and hit the mark at 7:42 thinking "way too fast." My watch said 7:48 for the second mile, but it's miles are a little off, so I checked total time at each mile. Into the wind I was chugging along at a HR of 180-184 and then got it back down to 178-180 with crosswinds and tailwinds. Most of the mile splits were darn close to the overall 8:04 pace with the headwind portions adding 10-20 seconds (the mile mark was half-way in the headwind leg). Managed mile 11-to-12 sub-8 with some tailwind.
Course: Two 6-mile loops around a corn field. The race started about 0.5 miles from a corner, and went 1.5 miles East then 1.0 miles South, 2.0 miles West, and 1.0 mile North. After the second loop, we went North a bit more and then West a mile before finishing with a 0.1 mile (maybe 0.2...) dash to the South again.

speedy smokin' ridiculous whacko fast ... CONGRATULATIONS and well done on all the hard miles, long long hours, and chilly mornings!

Your mom is a fastie, too.

Folks tend to forget that the faster you are, it DOES NOT hurt any less nor is it any easier. Folks like you, humble, don't point that out, so I will, and tip my hat to you.

I don't know how you could run 13.1 with NO hydration and still do so well!!
