Subject: First Olympic Triathlon - training program required!

Hi there,

I am really new to triathlons, i did my first sprint triathlon in Edinburgh approximately a year ago, and then due to work commitments havent done another since. I have been transferred with work to Cape Town and the climate and sight of others training has inspired me.

I have decided to do the Bath (UK) olympic triathlon in August 2011, and then if i survive i am planning on doing the ironman 70.3 South Africa, January 2012!

I need some help please...

  • I am planning on buying a Garmin 310XT to help me train. I would like a training program which includes heart rate zones any ideas where i can find one ? i have found lots of training programs but none with heart rate zones in.
  • I am planning on doing both triathlons on my road bike, I don't have a TT bike, I am going to get some aero bars for my bike, should this be ok ?

Any other tips anyone has would be greatly appreciated. The main thing is finding a training program so I can get training asap!

Cheers,

Olly

Hi Olly, welcome to BT and back to triathlon, good luck

Three of the Olympic training programs here on BT use heart rate training. I am not sure about other sites. It's also really important that you do lab or field testing to establish your heart rate zones, otherwise the numbers you're using are probably worthless. Here's a good read on it (just the first few posts although the whole thing would give you an excellent set of tips and training education):

If you get aerobars for your road bike (which is definitely fine), you should get another professional bike fitting to put you into a proper aero position with them, which is different from a road riding position.

Don't swim around Seal island no matter how fast you are. Wecome to BT. TriAya gave you good advice, listen to her except on cat issues.

Road bike with aero bars should be fine.

As far as HR training...it can be helpful, but as a beginner, don't wrap yourself too much around it.  Just S/B/R more.

I'm nearing the end of week 13 of the 16 week 3x Balanced Oly plan and as a newbie I've found it a great starter plan. I've got an HRM, but I decided I was just going to use it as an educational tool initially, I keep track of it during training to get an idea of how HR relates to RPE and to experiment with pacing myself on HR which can be very useful for stopping yourself from bonking in a race (when I got on the bike at a sprint last weekend and my HR was at 175, I knew I wouldn't be able to sustain it and pegged back to low 160's and had my best bike leg yet and didn't die on the run).

A lot of sources seem to advise against worrying about zone training in the first year, and just doing the time.
